I feel like I was right not to be overly concerned about the safety position when everyone else was panicking. Well I'll admit Rapp was much worse than I expected. I don't know if it was the injury or what but he went from being a decent player to an outright liability. My whole thing all along was I didn't need a superstar at the position, just no liabilities. Once Rapp was removed and we inserted a replacement level player in Poyer the whole machine clicked into place. Obviously big credit to Bishop as well who has elevated his game well beyond what I expected based on his early season play.

Rapp's play last year was the exception. He was much better than I expected last year. What he was this year is the rule for his NFL career.

It is crazy to me that a huge part of the problem is that people have no forking idea what their assignments are.

Like the biggest value Shaq and Poyer seem to have are getting guys lined up properly....

Bernard, Milano, Rapp, etc. have been here a decent amount of time and it's like the wheels fall off when they're on charge of setting up the defense this year.

It's really wild.

My take remains solid! I knew he would be back which is exactly why I never stopped following his wife on instagram! 😁. Really though he has done a serviceable  job and exceeded my expectations. I was most concerned about safety going into the season  but Cole has been great (since poyer started)  and poyer has done a nice job. Safety is far from teams biggest issue.

I think Cole Bishop benefits greatly from having Jordan Poyer with him.

Safety is a very cerebral position. It requires a high football IQ. Poyer has it and Bishop was drafted in part on his football IQ.

CB used to be just an athletic position but with the advent of pattern match D's, it now requires the ability to think on your feet.

Several years ago Beane said that the light hadn't yet come on for Elam so I think he was a bust because he lacks a football IQ.

Plus he liked to grab jerseys. The fact he washed out in Dallas that quick, with the state of their secondary, tells you all you need to know.

Question is - how does he play in the playoffs where you are matching against accomplished QBs

Well if you look at AFC picture there is not a better QB then Burrow. He also played against  Mahomes this year. We are talking Nix, Lawrence, Rodgers, Maye(arguably best of bunch), Stroud. I have faith!

Or maybe it was due to him playing hurt.  Eventually he gave up and went on IR and did whatever he should have done back in September.  But from the sound of it either way, he'd be out the rest of the year.

Regardless, as I say, his play looked more like hia NFL career prior to 2024. 2024 is his best year.

Rapp was very good last year for sure

After what we saw at the beginning of the year I have not much Faith he will get back to that level.. he's a hard-hitting depth piece who played one year at a really good level

I did have faith but I agree

better than early in the season at least

It was always gonna take Tre some time to get up to speed and leave those two serious injuries behind him. It usually takes longer for older players. The instant gratification crowd here had zero tolerance though.

The Tre hate is unreal. Like it's not actually based on anybody who watching coverages.

He's been a decent CB2 on the outside this season.

The mischaracterization of his play and the lack of respect for his career is sad to see.

Poyer’s play has really surprised me. I thought he was done.

I think he'll always be an asset against the run and he's possibly a liability against the pass but as some have said (re Tre also), getting the team lined up properly, contributing to film study, being able to put wins and losses and good plays and bad plays in perspective... all these things have real value.

💯 my thoughts exactly.

i figured we’d be getting the 2024 version of Rapp.  McD alluded to him being injured all season, not sure if he’s just covering for the guy or what, but he was abysmal this season and sinking the ship.  Poyer was just what this defense needed.  Theres still plenty of time for him to get exposed, but he’s been solid.

I don't know Rapp's contract situation but I hope he won't be retained or at least that he'll be no better than a backup.

“Cooked”. “Toast”. Bunch of JV talent evaluators round these parts.

"Washed" seems to be the current term for a player who no longer has it.

As far as JV talent evaluators, it's interesting seeing how some plays and players are described around here. The interception that Lamar Jackson threw off the hand of Mark Andrews is a good example. You can tell who understands what they're seeing and who doesn't.
