Waller had retired and was away from the NFL last year.  Why couldn't Miami just sign him without giving compensation to the Giants?  The Buccaneers didn't give the Pats any compensation for Tom Brady.

He was still under contract with the Giants, this they retained his rights if he chose to return. Essentially they don’t lose him for free and remove the dead cap hit is what I’m seeing. Could be wrong though.

The NFL treats retirement as a pause in the contract status and Waller had three years left on his contract with the Giants so they still held his rights. Brady had signed a three year contract in 2019 that was essentially voidable by either side after each year. Supposedly Brady was asked to take a pay cut which the Patriots knew he would not accept.  So Brady voided the contract and was an unrestricted free agent when he signed with the Bucanneers.

They’re trying to break it all down and not pay old ppl big money contracts. Yet simultaneously “trying” to sign to plug holes to “look” good to the fan base

they really should have drafted A TE this year knowing they were t gonna get a deal done w Jonnu

Kinda like the Bills should have drafted one w the Diggs situation?
