They are people in this world that have lost everything...house, car, savings etc

Gambling makes people do incredibly stupid things.

It all stems from making poor decisions, we have all made poor decisions at one point or another in our lives, some of us don’t make a habit of doing so. Others? Not so much.

Players have likely been doing it for a while now, they just haven't been getting caught...now the NFL apparently has a multitude of ways to find out, there are likely going to be a lot more players in trouble in the next year or two as they uncover more and more of this.

The NFL is walking a funny, fine little line right now.

On the one hand, getting fully into bed with legal sports betting, promoting it three times per commercial break, adding handheld betting machines to stadium seatbacks, etc....all while telling players "gambling is bad!".

And I'm not talking about gambling on other NFL games. If I understand it correctly, the NFL will discipline players for gambling any amount, on any sport.

Ridiculous.

I've stopped listening to GR-55 in the afternoons b/c the show has become very gambling focused.  I have no interest in gambling or sports gambling, and don't consider "sports gambling" to be a mainstream category of "sports talk."

You can already see where this is going; in 10 years there will be no dividing line between "sports talk" and "gambling talk."  I guess that's when I move on to other things.

word on the streets is that there are a bunch of guys that are going to get hit with punishments from gambling in the near future. Hopefully no Bills make the list

If/when it gets bad enough, and the league decides they need to do something about it, they'll make an example of a bunch of guys.  It's all politics.

they should allow them to bet any other sport but football, and if they are doing it on a treadmill in the facility who cares

There are logical reasons to block players from all gambling, even casino gambling. Simiar to drug problems, gambling additictions can cause big issues, and NFL players are in a unique position to "solve" their gambling problems with questionable play.  Most of us can't pay off gambing debts by doing a bit less than usual at our jobs.

10 years? Lol. There is basically no dividing line right now. Every league and basically every major media outlet is already in bed with the various casinos and online sportsbooks. Guess you’re not paying that close attention.

I didn’t see this posted, but with Rogers from Indianapolis now being under investigation for hundreds of wagers with numerous ones on the colts and the suspension of a group of Lions players for gambling on games and Ridley for a year.. Why are they being so dumb? Isn’t it obvious to everyone that if you gamble on the game you destroy the integrity of said game?

They see P*tsies GM get away with cheating multiple times so trying to follow example.

The Athletic has a good story about the issue:

"All five players agreed that the NFL and the NFLPA need to do a better job at teaching the gambling policy to players, particularly in an environment where four teams have a sportsbook in their stadium or the immediate vicinity and the league has official partnerships with FanDuel, DraftKings and Caesar’s."

Based on this passage, I'd say the league and the union need to get their s**t together and lay down the ground rules.

They shouldn't allow gambling on the games at all. This was just the inevitable result of that decision.

well if you’re going to blame someone for allowing it that would be the Supreme Court. The NFL can’t just ban something that’s been determined to be legal by our courts.

And why would they even if they could? Look at all the new money flowing into the league’s pockets since it has been legalized.

It’s ALWAYS about the money. Look at what happened to golf today.

This will have as much impact allowing laywers to advertise on TV.

Flood of money in with little regulation.

The NFL should make it simple. Your gambling career is on hold until you are no longer in the league. That means all gambling.

Caught? Banishment.

That's pry the most logical conclusion of where this is heading.  I don't know about banishment but a one year suspension.  If you lose a lot in betting say a hockey game there has to be a temptation to maybe bet a football game you're playing in to get out of the hole you dug yourself into.

Just out of curiosity, why would you post that here and not on a Pats forum? I'm actually curious. Why spend time here instead of on the message boards of your team?

I'm not saying you shouldn't post here, mind you. You are welcome to.

even Pats fans dont want to talk to other Pats fans....
