I didn’t see this posted, but with Rogers from Indianapolis now being under investigation for hundreds of wagers with numerous ones on the colts and the suspension of a group of Lions players for gambling on games and Ridley for a year.. Why are they being so dumb? Isn’t it obvious to everyone that if you gamble on the game you destroy the integrity of said game?

Because gambling is:

1. Fun

2. Addictive

3. Now legal and promoted literally everywhere.

Next question.

I'm sure they do, and they pay attention to that like they do the gun policy and domestic beatings policy.

Point being those things happened outside the facility.

Why do you think the Texans handed Watson a stack of NDA's and told him to get his private massages somewhere else?

I think it's easy to say they're stupid, the act is of course but there are reasonably intelligent people who make stupid mistakes for different motivations.

Especially when it comes to gambling.

When I was 25, I was bartending and had a great night in tips.  I just wanted to go home and sleep but got talked into going to the casino.  I lost everything I made that night and more.  I had to work multiple double shifts in a row to get money back.

So yeah, the smart thing to do is to just stay away and not be dumb.  It shouldn't shock anyone that a 25 year old did something stupid.

The difference here is that everyone of these players earns in the top two percent of all Americans every year/season, they are already rich, you weren’t rich…, and they are morons.

They are people in this world that have lost everything...house, car, savings etc

Gambling makes people do incredibly stupid things.

they should allow them to bet any other sport but football, and if they are doing it on a treadmill in the facility who cares

Sounds reasonable until to bet on any sport EXCEPT if they have friends in another sport, say  MLB they can tell their friends which football players are hurt to affect their betting and the baseball players can return the favor by telling which baseball such as pitchers are hurt.

And as far as in the facility that also makes sense if for no other reason liability.

I'm sure it went on as much or more before.  Too many ways to get caught now.

And I am sure there are more intelligent gambling players that set up ways they gamble without getting caught even now.  Where there is a way to make some big money there will always be people that will be doing everything they can to get it.

It’s really just small scale gambling. Some players are stupid.

Was it not inevitable? Not even throwing games per se. A player can bet the under on a prop and make sure it stays under.

The NFL is walking a funny, fine little line right now.

On the one hand, getting fully into bed with legal sports betting, promoting it three times per commercial break, adding handheld betting machines to stadium seatbacks, etc....all while telling players "gambling is bad!".

And I'm not talking about gambling on other NFL games. If I understand it correctly, the NFL will discipline players for gambling any amount, on any sport.

Ridiculous.

No.  They are banned from NFL football and banned from placing a bet in the team facility.  These were bets placed at the team facility.  Any bets on NFL games and he will probably be made an example out of.

...wait, what?

I tried to find the article I read where the notion of every stadium seatback having a handheld betting device to place live bets was discussed. I could not. Perhaps it was nothing more than a fanciful notion that has no chance of ever coming to fruition.

The NFL DID, however, vote to approve sportsbooks opening in NFL stadiums in states where sports betting is legal.

It's almost like it's an addiction and they cannot help it or something.

It is a impulse control based addiction.  Just as there are people that are addicted to shopping  and some people just need to spend a set amount of money to get their rush.  And the fact that the area in brain responsible for impulse control I believe is in the frontal lobe and is often damaged by repeated concussions .  Hence we get the addicts of gambling, drugs, alcohol all spiraling out of control and we get the suicides.  So the problem is certainly one I think the NFL holds liability for whether or not the bet is placed in facilities or anyplace.

….….or, they just didn’t know their location on their phone was going to ping as having been done at a team facility.

The devil can be in the details. “How will they know?” When you get caught the “how” doesn’t matter. Just don’t do it.
