The only real problem isn't that Oliver is a bad player, he's not.

It's that there's a real possibility that he's going to spend a large chunk of his career regularly fighting injuries that hamper his speed and strength.

That is my only worry. But the only injury he has had so far is an ankle yes?

Why not just allocate that towards keeping Edmunds if you are inclined to overvalue your own picks? I'm hoping that aren't too many more bad long term deals that will hamper the next GM into the future

Prime....if Ed balls out and leads us toward a championship with the "learning curve" issues, I will be the first one to personally apologize to you. I just see Dareus 2.0 in this whole extension.  And we all remember how that worked out.  Ed shows me nothing that screams 10M/yr, let alone a whopping 17 large. And I think you're extremely underestimating Sean's "Belichick-like" abilities to micro manage.

This is 100% fair. Like i said. we are right a third of the time and wrong the rest lol. Your track record for being right is a little higher but seriously. only time will tell. I guess my point is? No point getting overly wrapped up over this in the now~ understand?

sounds like its actually 15.75 million making him the 16th highest paid interior defensive lineman.  Are there 15 better 3 technique Defensive tackles in the league?

The bills have no dt signed for next year except Oliver.  Its unreasonable to think you would be able to sign 2 or 3 above average DT's who are free agents and draft 2 more in one offseason.  Its going to be hard enough with oliver still here.

also it sounds like he may have an opt out after the 3rd year which is an incentive for the player and maybe why he signed the extension right now.

The extension is 4 years, $68 million as his 5th year option in 2023 was already fully guaranteed. People are going to want to put this in the best possible light, but it is what it is. Judging by guarantees, yes, it’s likely that the earliest out is after 2025.

Also the contract comparisons are for all DTs, not just 3Ts.

What’s the cap savings this year?  Not sure it’s DHop money, but gives us sone breathing room.

We are definitely up against the cap and I believe Beane likes ability for moves during the season.  Need cap space for injury replacements and such.

We don’t know yet… they don’t need much space for D Hop as they can backload the crap out of it like Von’s contract that cost them like $5m last year on the cap

No, he's had a pec injury, has had to wear a knee brace and has had "core muscle" surgery in the offseason previously.

And those ankle injuries are chronic for him; they've popped up I think every single year he's been in the league.

It's a problem because a) at his size he has to work so hard that it makes him more prone to injury and b) when he does get injured it's more detrimental to an undersized guy who relies so much on effort.

Assuming they want to sign him for multiple years.  Next year they are already -14m against the cap.

This could free up this year for a one year deal with an option for more.

When healthy, do you believe he is a top 10 interior d-linemen?

isn't the bigger question "how do you replace him" going forward.  Having no DT's signed for next year, especially the under tackle would be a huge problem.

Which other 3T would be available to step right in and play his snaps?  How much would he cost in free agency compared to oliver?  What is available in the draft next year etc.

Extending him fills one spot and allows the organization to at least have him going forward who they can rely on.  There will be enough gators in the swamp as it is on defense next year.

thats a next year problem.

and i wouldnt mind seeing a rookie fill that spot. it would at the very least, give us a new whipping boy.

I don't watch film of 50 other NFL DLinemen and neither do you.

My guess would be that he's somewhere in that neighborhood.

Finally a move worthy of our standard knee-jerk overreactions.

This one is absolutely bizarre, Beane. I literally can’t figure out how this makes sense. Ed ***** Oliver is now a top 10 paid DT in the NFL??? For what ***** reason? I can count on two fingers how many truly impactful/game-changer Sundays he had - and I’d be left with one lonely finger.

He's in the 11-16 range. Once Q Williams and a cpl other dts get paid , he'll be alot lower.

For the most part Beane has hit on his contracts and timing of them. If Ed lives up to his potential,  Beane just saved 5 mil a year. If not, im sure they'll have an out in 3 years or so. Ed would start on any nfl team, the #s look big, im surprised but I trust this F.O

Ha. I have been at a comedy gig. But I have been telling people since January and certainly since they didn't trade him before FA that the most likely outcome was an extension.

You are still at a comedy show, of sorts. Soak it in and have a good belly laugh.

So basically we're both hitting. 333.  Cool

He won’t be at the Bills on a 1 year deal.. they would need to spread it out like Vons deal
