He has some weird agent that is persona non grata in the NFL.  I don’t know the details but usually that stuff means it’s 100% about the money which is fine and his prerogative.  There are probably 15 teams or more out there that can out-$ the Bills and Chiefs by a ton.  It only takes one.  The money Baltimore gave Beckham was beyond stupid and someone will do similar for Hopkins.

I think it’s likely someone offers him a lot more than we do.  We aren’t in position to be the highest bidder.

  • He is 1 1/2 years older than Stefon Diggs
  • Prior to 2021 he started 126 of 128 regular season games
  • His yards per game average last year was 10th best in the league
  • He is not coming off any injury limitations nor does anybody have reason to believe his risk for injury is higher than any other player
  • Prior to the only major injury in his career which occurred in 2021, he had 115 catches for 1,400 yards and 6 TD's
  • The nature of his PED suspension seems to revolve around healing vs enhancement / it wouldn't seem he is at much greater risk for PED suspensions in the future, but we just don't know enough about the specifics
  • Hopkins has had less wear on his body the last two years as a result of injury and suspension

He has been a hall of fame talent his entire career. He just came off a year with a bad QB throwing him the ball, sometimes a 3rd teamer, and he was 10th in yards per game. It seems like a reach to think he doesn't have a couple elite years left. Get it done if you can. I don't understand how it's even a conversation.

here we go again with the CAP!!

Teams who have Owners that are willing to throw Cash $ around get to play by a slightly different set of rules.

Again, CAN we do that? Yes. It is possible.

But just because we can doesn't mean there isn't issues with that. That includes adding dead cap hits over 2-3 seasons longer than he'll be contracted to the team. Which means, we may not be able to afford players down the road because we're paying for someone who isn't even on the team anymore.

Just because it's something that can be done and it's something you, I, or other fans are comfortable with doesn't mean that it doesn't come with pitfalls and that there's no reason for Beane to not want to do that.

If he is like most athletes who express a desire to pursue a ring, but choose the highest bidder when it comes right down to it, we are out. Either his enthusiasm for playing with Josh Allen was empty rhetoric or it isn't. Have to hope he is eccentric enough to prioritize winning and being part of something special over banking the most cash possible.

if we’re within a certain range of the highest offers, especially the guaranteed $ aspect…that may be good enough

Poona Ford was originally offered a contract by us that he didn’t accept, then we upped our offer and he signed here…

but it was reported he took less from us than the other offers for chance at a ring

If the cost of winning a championship is a cap issue and a couple losing seasons in 3 years then I'm on board with that scenario.

Bingo.

I'll trade a decade of 12-5 for ONE Super Bowl Trophy.

He will go where the most money is. By the way, has anyone else been tracking this?

if this connection is true, you can pretty much rule out the Bills IMO.

"The belief was that Hopkins might be willing to take less money as a free agent, but it doesn’t appear that the Pro Bowl wideout is going to do any teams’ bank account any favors."

Bingo! Exactly what I thought. People who think he's willing to take a discount to play for a ring are kidding themselves.

He got released for a reason, and it was so he could seek more money.

My level head tells me that if we have to contend against Kelce/Hopkins and Chase/Higgins for the next two years, we become dark horse Super Bowl candidates. Who knows what happens after that but I'm not comfortable waiting to find out.

But again, what does that have to do with the possibility that Hopkins simply chooses to go to KC over us? It's not as simple as Beane just wanting him and making the Cover 1 offer and he's ours.

Has Hopkins talked about Josh and us? Yes. But he's also talked about KC and Mahomes in the same conversations practically every time. Josh was the first name out of his mouth.

But if you think it's absolutely impossible that he could get on the phone with Mahomes and Reid and like what they're saying more than us, you're being a homer.

Side note because I missed it in my first reply: your "nuclear" idea isn't a simple snap your fingers and make it happen option. The odds that there's a team out there that wants to take Ed Oliver on a 1 year deal for 10.75m guaranteed contract this late in the Offseason is EXTREMELY unlikely.

I can't believe some fans are already trying to rationalize Hopkins possibly going to KC over us. It's an unmitigated disaster if that happens, period. The next time Davis drops a pass that costs us the #1 seed I'll look at our salary cap table and feel better I guess.

Do I want to see that happen? Absolutely not. Do I want to see him in a Bills uniform? Absolutely.

But it's not reality to think there's absolutely no way we won't get him. It's not an impossibility to think he could prefer KC over us when push comes to shove.

If the poster that facilitated these kinds of posts is to be believed, it's not only a possibility, it could be a reality.

His Agent(s) is going to put that out there regardless

I agree with everything you said. Problem for Beane, if we don’t have a Lombardi in 2-3 years there’s a very good chance he won’t be here. If he wins one in the next 2-3 years, he won’t have to worry about long term.  He’ll be here for another 5-6 minimum (if he wants to be here).

We're past settling for 12 win seasons and a playoff game or two ending with some coaching gaffe or some one in a million type play to end the game.  The window is open now.  Go for it!

That is not how it works. At all. There are no guarantees. What if you slightly improve your odds? Does that still make it worth it? What if he gets hurt, like Von?

You pick your big swings carefully, then live with the results. Oh, and ignore the hindsight specialist fans who knew better all along.

we can offer 28 mil guaranteed (see Cover 1’s breakdown)

I saw it.  That’s kicking every possible penny down the road with 5 restructures (dion, Tre, Taron, daquan and Hyde).  I don’t see any chance of that happening.  You don’t either

Edit: apparently, my information is incorrect and we can guarantee him 25m by restructuring Dawkins and Tre.

No. No it’s not. It’s with only Tre White or Dion Dawkins being restructured…..

A contract can be done to have his cap hit for this year between 3.5-6 million

I think those are fair to good to real statements.  I hope he is here for another 5-6 or more and a Championship!

That would be the Cat's Pajama's.
