McDermott hammers point about Allen running less and sliding. Says it MUST change next year...

Said it is unsustainable the way he is playing football and being wreckless at times. Says history has shown it and says they talk about it all the time but the message doesn't seem to have gotten through enough and says it HAS to change next year.

Brought it up multiple times during the interview apparently.

Pretty strong message being sent from McD. Should make all the people freaking out about Allen running so much happy...

I'm almost wondering which path leads to a higher injury risk because you know he's never going to go into full on protection mode. I think the worse place he can be is in between who he is and who others want him to be. That's where injuries will happen.

Get the OL squared away and he won't have to bail and run as soon as he gets the ball.

You don't remove that part of his game entirely, though. You can see how hyped the team gets when Josh runs for a big first down or leaps over a dude.

I mean I'm all for him protecting himself and running less, that's fine. But you also gotta find that balance where they're still letting him be him.

For what it's worth, both injuries he's dealt with in his NFL career happened in the pocket.

It is on Josh and frankly I am not sure you can change him.

Sit his ass for a series to make the point if needed, Josh can’t be so “ignorant” as to purposefully put the entire team’s future in jeopardy, and that’s how you put It to him,  he will learn. It’s good that his Boss is driving this point home.

Our OL has been offensive

give him more time to work

Also not sure if its Allen or O Scheme but we have to be able to take the underneath stuff more regularly. This way he is not just waiting for the downfield stuff to develop and won't see protection break down as much so he won't have to run as much.

That's not happening. He's the most powerful person in the Bills organization outside of the owners.

Elway was the same way early in his career. He was just a smaller version of Allen. Early on he would scramble a lot. He didn't have as many designed runs as Allen does. But the game was different back then. Things changed when Davis got there. He did all the heavy lifting running the ball. As John got older, he became a pocket passer and hardly ran at all. Allen will probably have to the same if he doesn't want his career cut short.

99% of the time when Josh is running the ball HE does the hitting and the Defender takes the punishment. There have been maybe 2 hits in his career that he took the brunt of.

He is far safer running the ball and delivering the wood, than standing in the pocket while defenders tee off on him.

As long as they give him a strong OL and decent running game, they have every right to demand Josh chill out on the hits he takes outside the pocket.

There is a time and place to unleash Allen, but when he tears up his UCL, spends all week trying to find a way to get cleared to play, and then tries to punch the ball out on a turnover with his bad arm … it’s clear he needs to be coached on this.
