Bills Talk Show Hosts “Official Mock Draft”

Recommended Posts

If there was a draft for Bills talk radio and podcast media hosts, how would you rank them? My list takes into account insights, knowledge, entertainment and listenability. Here's my opinion...

1: Joe Marino - Locked On Bills

2: Jeremy White - WGR

3: Matt Parrino - Shout

4: Ryan Talbot - Shout

5: Joe DiBiase - WGR

6: Steve Tasker - WGR

7: Sal Capaccio - WGR

8: Greg Tompsett - Cover 1

9: Aaron Quinn - Cover 1

10: Mike Schopp - WGR

11: Chris Brown - WGR

12: Nate Geary - WGR

13: Maddy Glab - WGR

14: Pat Moran - Talking Buffalo

15: Chris Bulldog Parker - WGR

Notes on list:

If Howard was still around, I’d probably put him around 10.

Cover1 guys are obviously incredibly knowledgeable, and I learn a lot, but they just don’t have the best voices for radio imho. (doesn't stop me from listening, tho!)

Some awards from last season...

MVP of the season would be Jeremy White for carrying Howard for the year.

Comeback player of the year is Sneaky Joe. The guy was really annoying at first, but has gotten a lot better and has grown on me. Unless he’s hosting solo, then he’s brutal.

Most overrated would be for sure Sal, he obviously has a radio voice and, as the beat writer, has access to a lot of information, but he’s just too much of a Bills homer and comes across as arrogant – so loses more points there. Also, Sal, we get it, you love your son, but literally no one is interested! Like, no one at all!

Almost un-draftable for me is Bulldog. He sounds like he has marbles in his mouth when he talks and consistently runs out of breath before every sentence finishes.

Whattaya’ll think?

Awesome topic.

I think overall, WGR has leaned into sports betting a lot.

It is now common for all hosts (Bulldog included) to state in every segment seemingly: "what is the most likely outcome", "what are the odds", "over under", "what team is listed as the odds on favorite".

1. Mike Schopp

He still sets the table with all topics for the afternoon show. He talks way too much betting, he talks way too much fantasy, he wastes so much time, he is arrogant in his belief that he understands all trends in football.

2. Jeremy White

There are times that I think he's on. He had a segment this morning about the state of WR and it was excellent. But he can't sustain it and inevitably starts talking about Liverpool soccer, the Vanguard Championship, Top Swing golf documentary.

3. Chris Brown

He's the most improved on the list. A homer? Yes. But he's increased his knowledge of the game far an away more than anyone else on this list going back to when he was on the buffalobills.com website in 2006. Not a must-listen by any means.

4. Nate Geary

I like him on the postgame. I have heard what others have said, that he talks over his guests, always has to have the last word and I get that. He is able to pull statistics from Football Outsiders, PFF that I don't pay for the subscriptions.

5. Joe Marino

He's middle of the list for me. I don't learn anything new from him, and I think he has a pedestrian view of how to build a football team. But props for the daily content that is packaged the same way everyday.

- Getting tougher to rate now -

6. Sal Capaccio

I like him right where he is at. A small show, and a guest. Agree with you, stories about Florida (nobody cares), stories about Max (nobody cares). He loves to reset the deck and remind everyone of something he said 6 months ago. Loves loves loves to bask in his own importance. Basic football knowledge, says the obvious thing, probably is most generous to callers in terms of time to speak.

7. Steve Tasker

Occasionally will drop a nugget, or phrase something in an interesting way that puts a different viewpoint on a topic. Most of the time, it's cliches and old references.

8. Bulldog

He's Howard 2.0 to me. Feels like a guy that wakes up from a nap 2 minutes before the show starts, has no notes, no research done, just hops on the mic. When he talks about doing the show from home, not leaving the house, basic things like self-checkout at the grocery store, it's just a reminder to me at how low the bar is. On days without Mike though, he gets right to topics and brings in callers to carry him and carry the show. Less Bulldog, and more people = better.

9. Joe DiBase

Seems like a nice guy, but he is gambling obsessed, does all his "research" on Twitter and, in general, just talks too much. Over talks, goes on tangents, and still sounds so young with things like never run the ball, go for every 4th down, go 7 deep at WR. The day he was talking about how he had 800-steps at 4:00 PM, and Schopp said he had 930 for the day, and they both asked if that was normal, it's just amazing how as a man you don't have any more desire than that to work out and stay in shape. He has been obsessed with Odell Beckham for months, and my gosh, the Sabres trade deadline with the Jakob Chychrun. Everyday it was the "Chychrun trade".

10. Greg Tompsett

Know it all, loves to talk down to the fans who don't agree with everything the Bills do. You're like 26, you've just mastered everything there is to know about the NFL?

11. Aaron Quinn

I don't make it more than 2-3 minutes with him talking because he's just convinced the Bills don't need any WRs on this offense. Makes liberal use of the phrases: what fans don't understand or what people don't understand.

Don't to Listen To:

Matt Parino, Ryan Talbot, Pat Moran, Maddy Glab

You forgot about Rico on Buffalo Fanatics who is just downright fun to watch and interact with for a few hours after games on YouTube weekly.

There is also Dan Mitchell but I prefer the AFC East RoundTable held weekly on YouTube where he is one of 4 podcasters representing each of the teams talking friendly Smack about each others team. It’s going to get real interesting now with all the AFCE moves.

For me the Cover 1 guys have the most x's and o's insight. They look and sound about 14 years old but they know far, far more about assignments and such then any talking head with a mic I see on TV or a show.

For name guys, I like Chris Simms, minus his creepy "Boy Blue" comments.

Joe Marino and Mike Schopp are top seeds for me.  Joe puts in the work and you can tell.  He has his own thoughts and isn't a parakeet as many in sports coverage are.

I'm also a big fan of Mike. Is he sometimes rude to callers? Yes, but he too has his own thoughts and in a way he's changed how I think about football.  Listen to that show when Mike is out and you realize how much he carries that show.

Bottom for me Bruce Nolan. I tried with him, but I find him unlistenable. Talks a mile a minute with an annoying cadence and as if everything he's saying is an earth shattering concept. Nate Geary is another one. Overtalker and a know it all. He's the type that's afraid to ever admit he doesn't know something so he'll just talk out of his ass about something he doesn't really know much about.

I'm also still a fan of Buscaglia. He's kind of disappeared a bit behind the Athletic pay wall, but his draft coverage is still top notch. I actually pay for the Athletic during draft season to have access to his content. His podcast is just ehĥh, but the articles are good.

Maddy Glab, can't do it. When she fills in for Brown or Tasker I can't listen.

I actually enjoy Schopp. Fwiw I think half the old guys would retire if the bills ever won it. Bulldog always says that. I despise Sal. So cocky as if being the bills sideline boy is the most famous job in the world.

Parrino & Talbot are entertaining and informed and often bring on guests that are same. Good chemistry and flow.

Marino is earnest and good on draft. Also does a good job cross pollinating his show with other relevant team pod hosts. Gets dull during his wikipedia team/player detail recitation part of the pod.

Buffalo + trio are likable and have decent takes.

Gr guys are unlistenable.

cover 1 have prepubescent voices and need editing.

I've listened to them all. Joe Marino and Sal Capaccio are both bigger homers, in my opinion. I still like both of them.
