Keenan Allen could be a cap casualty according to reports

Recommended Posts

Multiple reports hinting Keenan Allen as a potential cap casualty due to Chargers cap situation.  Would be a solid WR opposite of Diggs, having two of the best route runners in the NFL.  Probably will get paid more than we want to pay if he's released, but an intriguing situation nonetheless.

Here are his stats for reference from https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/A/AlleKe00.htm.  Yes his hamstring caused missed games this year, but he was on pace for a Pro Bowl type year based on his 2017-2021 run.  Again, not advocating one way or the other, just putting information out there if we are seeking an alternative to a WR opposite of Diggs.  Allen is a known as one of the best route runners in the NFL and would help reduce double teaming of Diggs.

The Bills created a situation where they spent liberally on UFAs, then didn't draft a replacement for those types, and now find themselves with cap issues and few options.

WR is a perfect example.  When they signed Brown in Beasley to 3 and 4 year deals respectively, they should have simultaneously planned to replace them.  But they didn't, and we're back to needing WR help.  Or, they'll sign Emanuel Sanders to a 1 year deal and then just assume Davis will step up.  Really poor personnel planning.

Need to start drafting better...on offense especially.  No to a veteran UFA who is looking at a moderate sized contract at 2 or 3 years unless they're going to draft someone high as well who can step in if the veteran falters.

Bills have the same cap space (less than zero) as the Chargers.  Why wouldn't he be a "casualty" here?

Because he has a $15.5 million salary with the Chargers in 2023, plus some prorated cap bonuses for a total cap charge in 2023 of $21.7 million for the Chargers.

If he becomes a cap casualty and the Chargers cut him (not saying they will but whatever), they save $14.8 million in cap space in 2023. Allen becomes an unrestricted free agent who will. at the age of 30, presumably sign a new contract for a cap charge much lower than the $21.7 million the Chargers are strapped with.

I get why the Chargers want him off the books. I don't see how he signs anywhere for less than 15 mil a year.
