Oh how times have changed

Taking a break from worrying about next year, it's amusing to see how times and the game have changed in the NFL:

Stats for a well known QB in a season long ago (in a 14 game season):

Completions: 179

Attempts: 391

% Completion: 45.8

Yards:  2368

TDs:10

Int: 18

Rating: 54.8

In today's game that QB wouldn't even be able to make a team's practice squad.

In 1965 it got Jack Kemp Player of the Year award.

Old QB stats are interesting. You don't even have to go back to the 60's. Roger Staubach only had an over 60% completion percentage one time in 10 years. That year, he only had 286 attempts for 2,428 yards. Terry Bradshaw never cleared 60% completions. These guys were the two best QBs of the 70's. Dan Fouts is the only guy from the 70's whose numbers look remotely modern, but Derek Carr has better numbers than he did. Joe Montana was the first guy to have modern QB stats and he never threw for more than 4,000 yards. Mahomes has never had fewer than 4,000 in a season that he started and has thrown for more than 5,000 twice in his career. Different game, indeed.

I love the evolution of the QB Position.  We dont even have to go back that far.  Lets look at '91 (Probably Kellys BEST year)  His Numbers and where that would rank in the 2022 Season.

Attempts - 474 (14th) - Just Above Daniel Jones

Completions - 304 (15th) - Just Above Davis Mills

Comp % - 64.1% (24th) - Above Josh Allen

Yards - 3844 (9th) - Above Jalen Hurts

TDs - 33 (4th) - Above Geno Smith

INTs - 17 (1st) - Led the league this year by 2 picks

Rating - 97.6 (7th) - Above Josh Allen

Defenses got away with a lot more in those days. But fans like to see shootouts and good QBs are hard to find, so the rules were changed to favor the offense and to protect the QBs.

Every modern rule change in the last 10-15 years has drastically benefited the offense. You can't breathe on the qb anymore.  You can't hardly touch wrs. Why do you think there are fewer defensive HC's than ever.

Back in the old days you could cream the QB mercilessly and mug the receivers all the way down the field until the ball was in the air.  OL could not extend their arms for blocking. These are some of the significant rules that limited the effectiveness of the passing game.

Except for the catch rule. The old catch rule the reciever only had to have two feet down while possessing the ball for a microsecond.

If the old catch rule were reinstated in today's NFL, the results would be off the charts.

Although it also resulted in a ton more fumbles that today would be ruled incomplete.

I agree with this 100%.  Nowadays a guy makes a freakin' spectacular catch and one square micron of the ball touches a single blade of grass and it's a no catch. That's BS.  That's not what fans want to see, and it slows the game down with all the reviews. Just give it to the guy.

I agree with this too.  How many times in the old days did a DL pull his arms back making a tackle to make sure every pound of his body landed squarely on the QB?

I'M FEELING AGREEABLE TODAY!

Marino in 83 throwing for over 5,000yds and 53 TDs would be like someone throwing for 7k and 70tds in this generation.

Small point, but he was also hurt for a game or 2 that season, or else he would’ve also likely cleared the 4K yardage total, fwiw.

Very interesting.

BTW. Has anyone ever put on a pair of those gloves the receivers wear? You can't help but not catch the ball with those babies. I bet this boosts completion % by a percentage point or two. Seriously.

Ah, so Gabe went au natural this season, yes? 🤔

IMO a lot of those older guys who were great players would also put up bigger numbers today.

With better WR, better offensive schemes, all the rules that tilt toward offense it's almost a certainty.

Watching old games, if you had a 10 point lead with 8:00 to go in the 4th quarter the game was basically over.

In 1919 the NFL didn't even exist!  Times are changing fast, its hard to keep up!

Unless you were playing the Broncos with Elway at QB.  No lead seemed safe if your team was playing Denver.

Hall of Famer Joe Namath's rookie year was the only season in his 13-year career in which the threw more TDs than INTs. 220 career INTs to 173 TDs.

He also lost more games than he won. He was overrated.

That's pretty good, honestly. Top 5 in TD's and top 10 in yards. The only thing amiss is that high INT number.

The 90's were the sweet spot in the NFL. Defenses could still play, but you still had a ton of good offenses, legendary QB's, great running backs. Teams put up points, but you also had defensive struggles. I think the game was better back then, but it was also less safe for the players.

Back then a good CB like Robert James would never let a receiver get off the line.

Also back aways cbs had hands covered with stickem so they didn't need to learn to catch.
