It's a weird spot to place blame since Beane was not around yet. At the end of the day, the player didn't live up to his draft spot and that is his fault. Gabe is at least as good and probably better. Comparable yardage, Zay has 12 yards more, Gabe has one TD more, and Gabe has had only 77 targets while Zay has 106. I understand exactly what you're saying and agree that he did not live up to expectations. Some of that is on him, some of it is on the coaching staff, IMO. I disagree though that he "didn't live up to his draft spot and that is his fault." It's not his fault that he was drafted where he was drafted. That was a miscalculation on the part of McDermott/ the front office in place at the time and failure on the part of the coaching staff to get the most out of him. It happens. High draft picks don't always pan out with the regime that took them and some of them eventually figure it out with another organization. The points I was making were simply: 1) Yes, Zay was disappointing during his tenure with the Bills. 2) In no way is it his fault that he was drafted where he was. His dad insisting the problem was Josh not zay. I'm not a big fan of players that have baggage of family that generate negativity or do stupid things ala pats brother as well as obnoxious wife. Once you drop a couple of passes, it can get in your head and you start focusing on it, which can make it worse. Plus, I think the speed and physicality of the NFL game was a big adjustment for Zay Jones. A lot of people laughed at the contract the Jaguars gave him but he's been a big time, go to weapon for Laurence this year and a big reason the Jags may very win the AFCS and make the playoffs when that looked like a pipe dream just a few weeks ago.
