Nope, I mean move him to primarily a slot receiver, like the person that I was responding to stated.  I don't think you change Diggs' current role.

I think what some folks are saying is they did move him to play in the slot more already this year.  Hes done good and i agree with you wouldnt make him a primary slot or slot only.  But Im fine that hes getting more slot run.

As for Shakir, I agree with poster up thread that said Shakir for zone and Mck for man.

Diggs already plays out wide and the slot. So we're already doing what they said at times.

Yup. Dorsey has been moving him around to exploit matchups a lot more than Daboll did.

BBeane seemed frenzied on Draft day, dropping back multiple times. Then he moved UP TWENTY spots in Rd. 5 to grab him. 6 games in, Sean relies on him as a sure handed, wise punt returner. <read the last sentence again>😳 His savvy play belies a rookie WR and he’s seeing more playing time each game. He’s quick, smooth and gritty. Not just a willing blocker, he’s get quickly to his spot and will SMACK defenders, regardless of size disparity. He’s displayed excellent body control, fending off defenders to position himself to make catches, blindly toe taps the sideline and he’s earned Allen’s attention. <read the last sentence again> 😉

I love his No-nonsense, all business demeanor. The kid can play! I stand in awe of Beane’s drafting prowess as his staff continues to get raided, but the results continue to flourish.

Don't look, tell me how many punts he's been back to return, and how many he fielded?

We were on the KC 7 yd line prior to a penalty that took us back to the 3

He has 6 receptions on 11 targets (54.5%), 2 scored drops plus another 2 I think he could have had

I hope Shakir will be a very good player for us, but this is perhaps a tad of premature hyperbole

Well that's just not how the Bills operate. They move everyone around everywhere.

I think Shakir has a chance to be an outstanding slot receiver.    There are always going to be guys like Cooper Kupp and Stefon Diggs who can be great anywhere so that makes them more valuable but in the 5th round Shakir could be the teams offensive version of what Taron Johnson is on the other side............a superior position specialist at what is a de facto starting position in the NFL.

As for Beane's drafting...........I've said repeatedly and all along how much I love his work in round 1.    After that,  I'm not so much in awe.    Good enough but not amazing.  He's found some excellent players after round 1..........most notably Gabe Davis.    But round 2 and 3 have been sketchy and I haven't loved the "draft for need" thought process in most of those picks.    Having used 3 early picks on RB's in 4 years is highly inefficient, for example.

I think the likelihood is that a lot of the success we are seeing from the day 2 and 3 picks is a direct result of getting Josh Allen and the vast dollars and continuity they have invested defensively.    Young players are set up to succeed or at least look good with modest contributions.    How many times did we see Bills teams draft players........have them fail in Buffalo........then go elsewhere and excel?    The big difference is that with Josh Allen steering the ship and so much investment defensively these guys can produce or look good enough in limited reps IN BUFFALO to not draw negative intention.

Why not Diggs in the slot and Shakir wide?

They are playing Shakir wide and Diggs in the slot at times, especially when they need someone who can really pick apart the coverage in the slot

But you don't want Diggs in the slot full time, that would be a downgrade and waste Diggs skills, not to mention putting more wear and tear on him.

I 100% agree Chandler.  McDermott is notorious for easing rookies in, and not putting too much on them, too early.  He is starting slow with Shakir, and even slower with Cook, but both of them clearly belong.  I believe Shakir's role will grow quicker, and he will become another reliable outlet for Josh very soon.

Exactly.  Shakir and McK are not an either or for this year.  They both should play for many reasons:  There is not enough difference in them at the moment, what about injuries, what about 4WR sets....they both need playing time.  Then there will be the occasional game where we rely on one much more than the other.

For the future, however, Shakir will be better.  He's a bigger target, blocks better, has better hands (I'm basing this somewhat on his college tape), and seems to have a higher top end speed.

It makes it a little more obvious what the future will be when you put them in context.  Lil Dirty is a seasoned vet.  If we compared him as a rookie to Shakir as a rookie, I think Shakir would stand out significantly.  The counter would be that Shakir still needs to make the trip that McK did, but Shakir appears to have "Bills DNA" and will work like a madman to get there.

Here is my prediction - In two years we will be shaking our collective heads wondering how we ever compared the two because Shakir will be that good.

EDIT:  For his college tape and some amazing catches:

(No, I'm not his agent - just becoming a fan)

Compare McKenzie’s 6 game production to Beasley’s 2021 - 6 game production and McK looks like a leaky band aid.

He’s been such a marginal player ytd that the downside of sitting him is nil.

The upside of Shakir appears to be worth the slight risk.

Time to tear off the band aid and give the new guy a shot.

As long as the Bills coaching staff decides to play him.

We've got a history of not letting rookies outshine old veterans.

McD has a reputation for keeping rookies on a short leash and keeping them on the sidelines after a rookie mistake. I get the approach but sometimes I wish he would back down from that and live with mistakes in exchange for getting more talent out there. Sometimes I wonder if the benching after a mistake does more to get in the rookie's heads than sending them back out to make up for it.

I admit to sometimes getting frustrated with the coaching staff not playing rookies/young players "soon enough" but over time you see the same pattern emerge...

"Why isn't  ____ playing more?!"

Then he plays a bit, earns more time, and eventually becomes a solid contributor.

We have a top-notch GM and coaching staff.

Then there are guys like Benford. The 7th round is barely paid attention to by fans, yet our 7th round CB might be just as good as the 1st rounder, at least at this point in time. That's not a knock on Elam, it's a testament to finding players later in the draft.

It's not that Elam is bad, it's that BOTH are good, especially for rookies having to hold down the fort until White comes back.

THEN, you've got 2 talented rookies who have played very well, along with a top CB in the league joining the team. GREAT place to be!

Somebody actually gave a vomit emoticon over this post????  Lmao, what a terrible reaction to your post

Yeah, this guy is going to keep growing this year into a real weapon and consistent role on this team.

I said it all off-season and camp…McKenzie is NOT a starter in this league.   So many people got so butt hurt about that and argued with me he was gonna have some big season lol.  I was like nope, his season won’t look much different than years past.  The staff knew this too which is why they paid McKenzie backup money then added Crowder and drafted Shakir.

I was all aboard the Shakir train on draft night. Loved him coming out and I was confident he would go in the 2nd or 3rd round.  I didn’t even realize he was still on the board when we picked him.  I can’t remember even being that excited over a 5th round selection TBH.

The guy reminds me so much of Copper Kupp as a player.  And it’s no coincidence because he patterns his game off of him.  Shakir is going to be a stud for us, and his time to take over the majority of the slot snaps is coming this year and we could see that begin after the bye week.

He just plays so much tougher and smarter than McKenzie.  On a personal level, love McKenzie and root for him.  But on a non bias level, he just isn’t good enough to be an every down player.  Yes he runs fast, and that’s about where it stops when you name things he excels at.  He doesn’t run great routes, he doesn’t have great hands, he doesn’t do well catching in traffic, he isn’t physical, and his field IQ is a liability.  He is a good situational and gadget role player though.
