They want Morris over Howard, and it works out like this. Morris costs $705k $705k - $255k = $450k The bottom line is Howard did not look good and it's a "cut your losses" now instead of him taking up the roster spot and not playing well. $405k more to keep Morris over Howard in the sense of keeping a better player (who is cost controlled next year too at $870k) is not horrible to me. Beane had a swing and a miss but no sense doubling down on poor play for the money. Well this is certainly an optimistic way how to look at things. I can imagine another perspective.
