Got a feeling Cam Lewis sticks- plays both DB positions. Doubtful 5 RBs kept. Too risky to place Blackhear on the PS. I know I know Taiwan plays teams, but we have plenty of teamers. In my opinion, Jones is not a lock.

Jones is a lock. They have rested him the entire pre-season which is exactly what they did last year. If his place was in any jeopardy he'd have been given the chance to compete. You might not want him to be a lock. But he is a lock.

So Dawkins-Saffold-Morse-Bates-Brown.  Quessenberry as swing tackle.  Mancz as backup C/G

Two more, 3 at most.  Who?  I would guess Tommy Doyle unless his injury IRs him.

Hart?

Alec Andersen?

Tenuta was a draft pick, those guys sometimes get more roster shots.

Yea Doyle if he is healthy. That gets you to 8. I think Bobby Hart and Greg Van Roten are battling for the 9th spot.

Boettger (PUP, will probably go to IR)

As for Boettger, anybody knows how does it work? Do we need to put him on original 53 then IR him?

Also, same with White if he is not ready?

If yes, it will not be easy to cut 2 more players and get them back. I know it can be done and Beane did it in the past but it costs dead money AFAIK. So if this is the case I don't think Boettger makes original 53.

I would say you are probably right. I did not take into account that the staff has been resting him. Oversight for sure 😊

So the rules differ whether he is placed on IR at the start of the season, or remains on PUP/IR

For PUP, the player must miss a minimum of 6 weeks

Quote

After the preseason ends, the PUP operates a bit differently. If a player is placed on the PUP entering the season, he is required to sit out for a minimum of six weeks. At that point, teams have an additional five weeks where they can decide whether or not to allow the player to begin practicing. Once a player begins practicing, teams then have 21 days to decide whether or not they will activate the player to the 53-man active roster. If the player does not begin practicing within five weeks, or they are not activated to the 53-man roster within 21 days after they begin practicing, he will have to remain on the PUP list for the rest of the season.

Boettger may very well remain on PUP to start the season because an Achilles injury is said to be an 11 month injury, and his was torn in December.  Eric Fischer came back at LT in 9 months, but admitted he wasn't fully recovered and was relying on years of muscle memory and veteran craftiness.

For regular IR, the player must start the season on the 53 man roster and then be moved to IR.  The way this has been handled in the past is that a vet player, who is not subject to waivers and is on a 1 year contract, will make a "handshake deal" to accept being cut and re-signed.  There usually isn't an increase in "dead money cost" because the player chosen will usually not have an amortized signing bonus and will be on a 1 year deal.  The player is usually rewarded by their new contract being 100% guaranteed and possibly a bit of a bump in pay.  Taiwan Jones would be a good candidate for this.

As crazy as it sounds, Hart might make this team lol

Of the non-starters listed, he's actually playing the best, and also has inside/outside flex. Wouldnt surprise me at all to have Q/Mancz/Hart backing up, esp if Doyle goes on reserve.

I think Doyle possibly needing IR plays into a Ford vs Hart decision just for that possible inside/outside flex.

That's 8 though.  Who is 9?  Positive things have been said about Alec Anderson.  Do they try to put Anderson on the roster, or is he a PS guy?

What about Tenuta, whom they drafted - has he shown enough to be kept?

And then, Mancz - what's his injury and prognosis?  He was the backup center.  If he's gonna be out for a while, do they go with Bates (OK), with Van Roten (ick!) or do they bring someone in?

To me, they should just give Tenuta an accordion and lei and send him on his way. He's been underwhelming even for a 6th-round pick. He got blown up by guys Hart was manhandling the play before.

If Mancz has to miss time his backfill would likely be Van Roten, who's also a veteran and short-term serviceable with the interior line flex similar to Mancz.

Anderson and Owen I think have been the two rooks who have shown out the best but I don't think they must make the 53, they seem like a decent bet to get to the PS in the waiver tsunami next week. It's easier to hide your guys in the crowd when everybody's cutting everyone. If it's only 8 OL held at cutdown, that's one more bubble guy (Hodgins, Blackshear, Lewis) who avoids waivers before the post-cutdown roster juggling. They can re-add OL after that. Boettger could be PUP or simply waived/injured - I'd be ok with that, I thought he was a JAG before his injury.

See, I haven't been watching film, so good assessment, appreciate that.

BTW, are you doing coaches film on NFL+?  Have they repaired last year's downgrade yet, so that you can actually select plays and toggle between end zone and overhead views, and do slo-mo?

So again, I haven't been watching film but what I've heard on Van Roten vs Mancz is that he's a big step down.  Have you seen anything there?

And apparently Van Roten's experience as a C in NFL games is actually slimmer than Bates so....do we rely on Bates, or look for a backup center in the cutoff bin?

I don't think the Bills agree with you on the Boettger = JAG guy.  They actually signed him as a ERFA AFTER his injury, so if the intent were to waive him injured, why would they do that?  I don't see anything as changing since the Bills made that decision, it's not like he's been out there getting outplayed by Ford.

So just listened to Brandon Beane's presser today.

I know some here will be distressed or even triggered by the news:  Beane was asked, when looking at the back end of the roster, how much weight do you put on guys who might be only special teams contributors,vs guys who might be able to contribute more at their position group offensively or defensively?  Of course Beane prevaricated some about the "only special teams", but he flat-out said if you aren't going to be starting every week, you have to be able to play special teams and "if it's close" we're going to err on the side of a guy who's a dominant special teams contributor. (this is about 12 minute in).

Same presser, Beane said that Doyle is not expected to be a long-term injury, so there's your 8th.

I didn't catch anything he might have said about Mancz.

Mancz not yet ruled out for Friday. I’d give that a positive denotation.

You’re probably right, but there’s also a chance that the Bills already know what Jones can do and since he’d probably retire if he got cut, why risk injury to the 12 year vet.  He’s guaranteed $650k even if he gets cut.  I’m not reading anything into him not playing in preseason other than the Bills are giving younger players every opportunity to take his spot.

Beane and McDermott say this every year.  Everyone knows that but every year there are also exceptions.

Last year Breida make the team and had limited ST play even when he was active for 9 games.

Gabe Davis wasn't a starter and took almost no ST snaps.

We'll have to wait another week to know.

What Beane said about Sweeney was interesting.  I now can see Knox, Howard, Sweeney as TEs especially since Dorsey said Gilliam

is strictly a FB.

Risky how though? I love the way Blackshear has played, but realistically there's no path for him to be a contributor here. If Singletary commands big money after the season and the team decides to move on, he could certainly be a candidate for 3rd string next year, but there's a million guys that could be in that role. He'd almost certainly be inactive every week behind Cook and Moss. When Moss is due for a new contract the following year, that could put Blackshear into a 1a/1b possibility depending on how Cook turns out and is utilized, but that's 3 seasons away and there will be dozens of additional young RBs that enter the league by that time.

Even if Blackshear becomes a Hall of Famer, I don't see any way that happens as a Bill. There just isn't an opportunity for a guy like him here unless he starts becoming a dominant ST player.

I don’t know.  Running Backs get dinged up all the time.  They can have fumbling issues.  I think Blackshear would be active more than you think.  To me, Running Backs are like relief pitchers.  You go with the hot hand and move on to the next one when they aren’t productive.  That’s why I like keeping 4.  Jones is a RB in name only.  Might as well list him as a specialist like the long snapper.
