A question, as a Buffalonian who has lived in London twice for a total of 4 years, and used to catch all the games in the Eric Moulds era at the sports bar on Haymarket:

 

How did you first start rooting for the Bills? Just curious.

The Patriots signed Darryl Williams (two t's).  I'm pretty sure Daryl Williams is a free agents still although his wikipedia page has him as a Jaguar?

I know the sports bar in Haymarket very well. I have never watched NFL there that I know of. I use it for big soccer days when there are multiple games at the same time, like the final day of a season. I have watched the NFL at the Hippodrome Casino in Leicester Square a couple of times though. 

 

As for my Bills fandom it is a long story, and apologies to those who have heard it before, but my grandad was from the Poland / Czechoslovakia border, joined the Polish army at the outbreak of WWII and was captured by the Germans. Anyway he managed to escape a POW camp and make it to France where he was hidden by the resistance for the final 2 years of the war, and then eventually made it to the UK post war. Met my nan, got married, had kids. In the 60s and 70s he took his family back to his homeland into the Eastern bloc every summer in a caravan, driving from the middle of England to Poland. He died relatively young, sadly, just before I was born but he had made my nan promise if he died first she would still go back to Poland to visit his family. On one such visit my nan met a younger brother and sister from Buffalo who also had roots in Poland / Czechoslovaki and were tracing a family tree, got talking in a shop and became pen pals which later developed into visiting each other. In 2002 we went to California (where the guy now lives) as a family for 2 weeks in August and while there I watched the Bills play the Lions in pre-season and was basically hooked immediately. I went to university that next year and used to watch the MNF with my kebab after a night out and then from 2006 when it first became possible to stream games I have watched the Bills most weeks. Since 2010 I have missed two Bills games and one of those was because I was at Wembley watching one of the international series games instead.

No I think the same Darryl Williams who had gone to New England (center out of Mississippi State... I actually liked him coming out and had a day 2 grade on him he went to KC as an UDFA) has been released and signed with Jacksonville. So I think Wiki might be in the Dar/r/y/e/l/l Williams muddle too!

Very cool story. Thanks for sharing. We are lucky the brother and sister were from Buffalo, so we get the benefit of all of your insight instead of it being wasted on the undeserving fanbase of some other team.

This is a great story! Wow. And thanks for retelling. So funny how these things come about. Anyway, glad it happened!

 

I ended up being born in Buffalo because it was the first city that offered both my parents a job in the early 70s. 

 

And I have missed a lot of games before, but not that many since, NFL streaming began.

 

The Haymarket sports bar was annoyingly loud, but it had the NFL Sundays.

 

But I never met a British Bills fan in my time there!

All kidding aside, thanks for helping out they Yollster.  I’m not that concerned about most of the line as all injuries seems temporary except Spencer.  The back injury concerns me.  He’s young so you hope he will heal quickly, and it’s not like he’s overweight.

 

Ques is a nice pick up which gives me some solace.

 

On a side note, they mentioned this morning on WGR that Howard finally had a good practice yesterday.  I was hoping we could add maybe 15% of the time some 12 personnel especially in the red zone.  We’ll see as I think Dorsey is still assessing what he has in these guys.  It would be dynamic to have a 12 option, the Cook vs. motor option for some pass catching RB plays, and the norm which will probably be Diggs, Davis, McKenzie, Knox, and Motor.

 

I expect that grouping more than anything else.

GB, there is a large contingent of Polish Americans in sections of the Buffalo area one by Bailey where it’s part German, and part Polish.  I grew up in the border of Blasdell and Hamburg and it seemed like everyone in Blasdell (all of 1 mile square) is Polish, but us (Irish and English), and Cheekitowaga.

There has been some chatter that the rookie CB Benford is getting some run with the starters.  This says to me that they are not happy with the vets who have been filling in.  Hopefully this kid has something, but I do think we are looking thin at that spot.

Your heritage also fits well with a lot of us from Western New York!  The "Polonia" community on the East Side of Buffalo in the first half of the

20th century has a rich history.

I think an interesting storyline to watch is the bottom of the secondary depth chart. By all accounts Benford has recently picked up his level of play, but McCloud has also reportedly had a very strong comp. Last year we kept 5 CBs and 4 safeties. White, Elam, Neal, Jackson, and Taron Johnson are all locks. On safety I imagine it will be the same as last year - Hyde, Poyer, Hamlin, and Jaquan Johnson. Where does that leave room for Benford or McCloud, let alone both?
