Flashbacks to our talking points last season...when it was also a bad idea. I love McKenzie but don't want him anywhere near the returner position.

It seems like many many posters on here agree with you....and when I think about that fumble against the Colts, particularly with not a soul near him and him just coughing it up like that, it certainly doesn't inspire confidence, but I just feel like maybe this can be the year he grows and puts the yips behind him and grabs that PR/KR position by the throat and doesn't let go OR give anyone else the chance to unseat him again....I guess I'm just that eternal optimist.  But in all seriousness, I only feel this way about him because I feel like he has the potential to be the most dynamic back there.  Amongst our other contenders, who represents an upgrade at the position over McKenzie?

Yes, I believe it was.

Some guys give me confidence when I see them back there.

McKenzie doesn't.

I definitely respect your opinion.  Amongst our other contenders at the position, who would you like to see win the job?  Or more importantly, who do you feel represents a better option/has more potential back there?

Until someone else demonstrates they will catch the ball reliably I want Micah Hyde to FC everything and be done with it.

And yes, Hyde is probably the only one who has earned McDermott's trust back there.  Two things though regarding Hyde returning punts/kicks: 1, like you said, 95% of the time it's going to be a fair catch, and 2, do we really want to put our all-pro safety out there and risk exposing him to injury?  I know he's a very smart veteran player but things happen....

Could be. Kromer has his work cut out for him, but he’s usually the right man for the job. Gotta give him credit.  Ford has some talent.  Maybe he just needed an all time OL coach and the of pressure being a FA after the season.

If he's just out there to catch the ball, yes.

In a perfect world we have a real PR but that's not McKenzie I don't think it's Stevenson and I need evidence of anyone else catching the ball before I offer any sort of opinion. Catching kicks in Buffalo is probably the hardest PR job in football.

I have a different view than a lot of people.   Talking punts first, I think the guy has two jobs:  Don't turn it over, and make the fair catch when you're supposed to.  That's it.  The rule changes have made it so tough to return punts, it's foolish to even talk about a guy who can take it to the house.  It's not happening, or at least it isn't worth hoping it's going to happen.  I don't even care if he has a better average than most guys.   Especially when you have the offense the Bills have, all that matters is not turning it over, and not getting pinned deep if you can avoid it with the fair catch.   So, I really don't have any interest in having McKenzie or Stevenson back there, because both are suspect in the ball security category.

I liked Andre Roberts.  He had some turnovers too, but to me looked solid back there making decisions and catching the ball.  And he had the plus of having a nice average.

If he weren't so important to the defense, I'd put Hyde back there.   He always catches it, he makes good decisions returning, and he gets some yards.

I'm a little troubled about it, because the Bills don't have anyone taking punts who gives me a good feeling.  I'd rather have someone back there who's always going to catch and hold the ball, even if the guy literally took a fair catch every time.

Ball security on kickoffs is just as important, of course, but I think it's easier.   I don't mind McKenzie back there, even with the gaffe against the Dolphins or whoever it was.   I doubt he's doing that again.   Or Austin is fine with me.   I also think the risk-reward ratio is better on kickoffs - that is, with a good return, you can get it out to the 40 or midfield, and that's worth having a guy who has the speed to do that, even if if he might lose it once or twice.

Both positions, I want a veteran.  Vets tend to hold on to the ball.

I expect it'll be McKenzie at both spots, and I'll just hold my breath.

Question for anyone who has parked in people's yards outside the campus.  I was thinking of bringing a wheelchair for my Dad when we go next week - are there sidewalks etc where a wheelchair can be easily navigated.  Would prefer this time to park there instead of dealing with the stupid school bus.  Also - is there an ADA section set up near the practice field - I've never taken notice in the past.

There’s no sidewalks really across the street. You’d be along the shoulder until you reached the driveway which is at least 100 yards. Then it’s uphill. You’d be best off pulling into the lot one over from where the buses pull in, see if you can’t talk your way into a handicap spot for your dad. Or at least if you could drop him off there, then park and meet him where you dropped him off. If you pull into that driveway, there’s definitely parking and blacktop for the wheelchair.

good luck

1) It was the implementation of more 12 and 21 personnel last year that finally got the Bills out of their offensive rut. They stagnated in a major way trying to operate only out of 10 and 11 all the time.

I agree with your other points but this confused me. Particularly the 12 personnel comment. Offense seemed rough til the end of the season and we weren’t dressing more than 1 TE (which itself Is crazy) at the end of the season. Are you basically just saying we used Gilliam in the offense more?  That feels

the only way we could be in 12

or 21 (depending what you label him

as). Do you have some splits to show?

The problem is those type of mistakes tend to resurface at the biggest times of the game usually, not just with him but with players that have issues like that with ball security.

Yeah agree. I’m not gonna advocate for him but get the upside with him.

It was drizzling a little at one point during camp. It’s likely water being ejected from the surface of the ball because of the G forces of Allen’s arm strength

He did take one back against Miami in 2020. But as others have mentioned it’s everything before he secures the ball that’s the problem. If he fixes all that (big IF) I’m fine with him

I was wondering by same thing

I agree with @John from Riverside  let them run. We’re gonna run 70%+ nickel cause we usually run 90%+ nickel. We have been decent against the run except for the super big runs. I think we get to more 4-3 (still not that much though) but it takes time as Bernard has to show he can handle the responsibility. Milano took a while to become a starter over Humber. But I get your excitement for Bernard.

Not everyone had the bubble helmet padding on. Most or all of the OL and TEs had them. Most of the DL, and LBs had them. Most RBs, WRs, and DBs did not.

I’m not sure where to find splits. I’ll poke around and see if I can find some and report back. If anyone reading this knows where to find some, please point me that way.

But yes, they were using Gilliam more, and they were also using Tommy Doyle as an extra blocker and eligible receiver quite a bit. He basically took on the “Lee Smith role” and became essentially a blocking specialist TE2.

With the whole fixed number of tickets, just curious for those who attended, crowded or not?  Bleachers full and people standing all the way around?

Long line to get in as practice started. They stopped letting people into the primary bleachers area by then, and wouldn't let anyone in for the rest of the day, to many fans' dismay. So the only options were the far side portable bleachers or standing around. Get to practice early if you want to get anywhere near the players.

By moving around we got some good views of RBs doing individual drills, and the first 7-on-7 RZ session.
