But why should we hamstring ourselves? Wouldn’t you want the best returner we can get so we can actually get good return yards? All of that just to protect Crowder?

I can't see keeping a guy as a PR specialist.  Roberts at least did both.

Diggs

Davis

McKenzie

Shakir

Crowder

Kumerow

I think they might keep 7 if either Austin or Hodges forces themselves on the roster...

If not, I think Crowder might be a surprise cut for either Austin or Hodges although I don't like that move. Crowder albeit hurt a lot is a very good WR in this league. Would not want to see him go somewhere else and put up 700-800 yards.

Stevenson gets stashed on IR

Diggs

Davis

McKittrick

Crowder

Shakir

Austin

Kumerow

If they all come out of preseason healthy, this is how I see it.

Austin - If he wins the punt return job, he'll make the team, if not, he'll be gone

Kumerow - He's a bigger WR and a top special teams player

Shakir - This kid has McCoach and process written all over him, he easily makes the team

Crowder - He's a good WR but has been injured this Summer. In October he'll get injured and Hodgins will get the call. When Hodgins gets injured in November OBJ will be signed.

Hodgins - PS bound

Stevenson - PS bound

Agreed on Shakir. I never advocated for him to go to PS. I’ve said I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets the IR tag, but I would doubt it because he can contribute right now.

A lot of people think we will keep Crowder because we need a back up for McKenzie, but honestly I don’t think that is needed and McKenzie has shown enough to trust him. I don’t see how we have space for Crowder when we have other needs, like who is doing PR. I supposed you could keep Crowder and cut Tavon, but that would mean you are trusting a rookie in Shakir to handle PR in a big time situation. That’s a big ask. The only reason why I think Tavon has a sneak advantage to a roster spot is because he is a good punt returner and can play slot if needed. Something Crowder does not offer.

I don’t see how Kumerow makes the team over Austin. If he does, who are you having returning punts?

Now that I posted about Crowder maybe getting cut, just read one article about how well Crowder has done and is likely a lock!  LOL

Most of them have been playing well. Hodgins is listed as Davis’s backup. It’s going to be interesting to see what direction they go.

If it's critical, just tell him to fair catch the ball.

Always have the Hyde insurance to take a critical punt.  Heck didn't he have that return in the Pats game in a less than critical situation as we had that game well in hand and could have withstood several gaffes if needed.  If we get to a do or die situation  they have options for max security.

So Hodgins has been emerging and is listed behind Davis on the depth chart which is an eye opener. Tavon is listed as #1 punt returner. There are going to be a lot of tough decisions to come I feel like when it comes to deciding how makes the roster for WRs sake. We only kept 6 WRs last year and 1 IR. Do you think we still go 6 or is this the year we go 7?

Hodgins has really thrown a wrench in all this. I have to believe that Crowder might be a surprise cut, as I don’t see Shakir getting cut or PS designation. It’s possible he might get the IR tag. Especially if McD determines that he really wants a player like Tavon for punts or a Kumerow for ST. I honestly don’t know what they do now.

I think it's not as difficult for the coaches to make decisions on the roster.  They see the players daily and see the interactions they know who is a good fit and how well they fit in to the team.  They move on from players when the fit isn't there a la John Brown, Emmanuel Saunders.  Both of those players were a fit but both also had limited shelf lives due to age.  Few athletes can fight the age factor.  When they do it usually takes extreme dedication to keeping fit and good genetics certainly helps.  After all Josh wouldn't be Josh if he were 6'0".  He might still have his high iq and processing skills but he wouldn't be holding off Arnold with a stiff arm if he was Russell Wilson sized.

It certainly Is why you can sign a Von Miller to a long term deal at his age.  Yes it could backfire with a unforseen injury but his flexibility that he's developed with his training techniques helps limit those in fact I think Groot will benefit particularly in the techniques that expand flexibility to protect his longer limbs.  If he plays to a high standard and helps Groot, Oliver and Basham how to elevate their games while reducing injuries, then his contract is a bargain.

Whoever we cut or try to send to ps will probably end up on the pats. Both for info and because their receivers reportedly aren’t getting open at all.

I’m po’d already, just thinking about it.

One option I didn't see mentioned here is stashing Shakir on the protected part of the practice squad. It may be Hodgins time to make the team. He would be a nice backup to Diggs and Davis outside. Keep Kumerow and assign Crowder to backup slot and kick return duties. Cut Austin. Stevenson doesn't seem ready yet, so IR or PS for him. Six receivers, with a quality backup in Shakir ready to be called up.

You'd have to cut him first to do that and he'd get picked up and put on someone's active roster before you could PS him. Abd even then I think there is a limit to the number of times a player can be protected on the PS I think it is 3 or 4 times.

Diggs

Davis

OBJ (mid November pick up)

McKenzie

Shakir

Kumerow

Hodgins

I think Crowder is a surprise cut.  He’s been hurt, has an injury history and been underwhelming from what I keep hearing from the best reporters.  Hodgins gets turfed to PS eventually.

The interesting debate Sal and Joe had yesterday was do we pick up OBJ now and have our team doctors and training staff work on his rehab in our world class facilities, or do we wait til November, but then compete with other teams like GB, the Rams, and KC for his services.

Who returns punts? Shakir?

In my opinion, Hodgins pretty much secured a spot with his play. He’s been playing well. Shakir handling punts today pretty much answered my question. If Tavon doesn’t see the field over the next couple of preseason games, he’s probably getting cut. So that makes me wonder who would make it over him, Crowder?

Today was the last straw for me with Kumerow. The guy had a key fumble and just can’t contribute enough on that side of the ball. I would not be surprised to see him get cut in favor of Hodgins.

After today's game, there is no doubt that Hodgins is a far superior WR to Kumerow. It doesn't matter that Hodgins was playing vs 2s & 3s, Kumerow is not capable of doing that against any level of competition. If we keep a guy just for ST coverage over a more talented WR, I'll be pissed. Most teams make solid ST players out of their talented athletes, they don't pay guys just to do that. We've sacrificed depth for years doing this, it has to stop.

If Kumerow is the #7 WR so be it, but he better not be in the 6 WRs if that’s all we keep. I’d rather roll with Crowder than Kumerow.

Austin is a cut.

I'd cut Crowder from this list. OR I could be convinced to cut Kumerow, if they're keeping Taiwan Jones. (NO WAY they should keep both Jones and Kumerow. Which is a separate issue from WR depth.) Crowder doesn't offer much value beyond backing up McKenzie in the slot. Other guys at the bottom of the WR depth chart add more value to the roster.
