UPDATE:  So each wing is a full wing.   NIce and meaty.  28 of them altogether.  So about $.88/wing.  They are chilling in the fridge now after being covered in a salt/baking powder mixture and will stay there until I smoke them sometime tomorrow late afternoon, early evening.  (pic just for reference; not mine)

I used to sometimes fry them full/whole... just cut the tip off. For some reason the kids liked them better like that. In a way they are juicier whole but whatever, they got their wings lol.

Best deal i can remember is when i was working 3rd shift back in the day. One of the local bars had a 3rd shift happy hour and opened at 7am. Small pitcher of beer and a dozen wings for $6.25

In the early 80s, The Casino in Bemus Point had a Monday night special: ten-cent wings and three Bud splits (7 oz bottles) for a buck. With a $5 bill, you could fill up on wings and beer and leave a 25% tip.

 

In fact, most places had a ten-cent wing night, and many offered pitcher specials on the same night.

For how many? Is that an order of 10 wings? Places around here often start with an order of 5 or 6 wings. I’ve seen some places with temporary signs announcing current wing prices because they didn’t want to replace all their menus. The market was changing that fast. 

 

My son used to order his wings naked with the sauce on the side. He knew it embarrassed me, but he said the wings were crispier that way. I have to admit there was some truth to that, but I couldn’t let him know that.

Went shopping at Restaurant Depot for Zucchini for my diet and snacks for my daughter's lunch and found small box of chicken wings @ $1.10 per pound.

They even had some miss-cut wings @ $0.99 per pound which just means the machine did not cut it exactly at joint.

Our freezers are full and there are still a few items in my wife's cafeteria freezer she needs to bring home so we passed on buying them.

 

For those who live in Buffalo there is one near Walden Exit of I-90 but in order to get a free membership card you need to be a restaurant or other licensed food vendor. Maybe you know someone with a spare card.

 

They have turkey wings too which are great on smoker.

Down here in Maryland, ordered some really excellent wings the other day from a local joint.  An order of 25 wings was $34. Sometimes they list “market price”.. which cracks me up.  Like Lobster.

In Maine, two things: (1) wings suck in general here, and (2) it's super expensive, like $20 for a dozen.  And that majorly sucks to pay so much, in particular if you don't care for the end result.

 

So, I've basically been shopping this sketchy Asian market nearby for wings, and they're cheap, like $3.25/lb (regular market is over $6/lb now).  Then, in cold months, I cold smoke then fry then season.  Or in warmer months like these, I dry rub, smoke (super heavy smoke, because...), and then flash fry.  I'll make some dressings and so on, but we're both more satisfied with our results here than we are at any restaurant currently.

Restaurant Depot is awesome.  I usually get mine at Costco.  As of now that means a trip to Rochester, but there will soon be one in B-lo.

 

I know the brothers that own a place in Buffalo known for its wings (always on the top rated places for them).  They’ve both told me they make almost nothing on them ($15.99 for 10) and just hope people that order them also buy beer.  Take out wing orders suck for them.

Let me just add, take out wings suck for pretty much everybody!

 

There were a few places that had OK takeout when I was a kid, but now they are just soggy by the time you get home.

One of the owners has told me how much he hates gettin a bad review for soggy takeout wings.  There’s nothing you can do.  Once you put them in a closed box they’re going to get soggy.

One restaurant's solution was a box which had ridges on bottom so any liquid pooled on there.

Another restaurant I ate at when I travelled only sold naked wings with your choice of sauces with them.

They even had a small cup for mixing wing with sauce which I used as shaker.

Actually, minimum wage was $3.35 at the time. That's why we knew all the places that had wing and beer specials!

 

But things are even worse today. To put it in perspective:

• minimum wage has increased by a factor of 1.24 since 1983 
• the cost of wings has increased by a factor of 15 since 1983 (based on this thread)
• corporate profits (after taxes) have increased by a factor of 13 since 1983

I do that recommended yearly check of my SS account and seeing what I made back when I first moved out of my parents' house back about 1997, I wonder how did I survive.  There's no way I could afford anything I have now with what I made back then.
