So Cleveland did their own investigation and never asked "so it's just the 22 women, right?  There shouldn't be any more that come up?"

And anything they say is just plain old PR spin to make it sound like they did the right things prior to signing him.

JUST 22 women? 😳

If he’s out 8 games he might as well be out the whole season. Brissett is not a starter. Their other QB: Josh dobbs. They will be out of the team playoff picture in a tough division and loaded AFC, then they might win just enough games to drop their top draft pick in 2023 even further without a 1st round pick. Why they are waiting this long though is ridiculous, they start TC in a week.

Adding Cam would just add to the sideshow up there. Pointless imo.

What's the reason again an 8 game suspension would actually be worse for the Browns financially?

It tolls the contract.  That is why I am in favor of a 16 game suspension allowing him to play one game.

Tolling means the contract is delayed right?  This would hurt the Browns salary cap?

No.  It would count.  His cap hit this year is only like $10M or something.  Next year it jumps to $54M.  If they suspend him for the year, or even a majority of the year, it basically gives him the same contract next year and essentially moves it a year down the road, so his hit next year would be $10M instead of jumping.

So an 8 game suspension this year means that next year, it would jump to $54 million cap hit next season?

Yes.  I honestly don't know the exact amount of games he has to be available for.  I think it used to be 6 for a 16 game season.  At 17 games, it may be 7, or still 6.  There were similar rules for players holding out.  They could technically hold out 10 games, play 6, and have their contract count for that year.  No pay for the games, and fines, but the contract tolls at least.

The contract is currently structured so that Y1 cap hit is $10M and Y2 is $55M.  If he misses the season due to suspension then his contract would toll and Y1 would be delayed until 2023.  It’s worth mentioning that the Browns are certain to restructure his contract in Y2 to greatly reduce that $55M cap hit.

What are their restructuring options?  It’s already all guaranteed, so would they just add years?

Conversion of base salary to signing bonus.  Using round numbers, they could convert $44M of his 2023 salary of $46M into a signing bonus.  That would be spread the cap hit over 4 years.  That would clear $33M in 2023 and add $11M each in years 2024-2026.  They could even add a void year to clear a little more space and spread the hit out one more season.

They could. But also, compared to other restructures, there isn't any incentive for Watson to do so. The whole thing is guaranteed. So why would he sign anything? A dead year or two makes the most sense.

The main reason I could see him doing it (besides being a team first guy), is that he would get a lump sum payment vice 17 paychecks.  He might need to settle some bills...

or for tax purposes...

When it comes to $$, and the single most important thing for Goodell and owners, player gambling is a worse stain.

We're talking billions of dollars in money for the foreseeable future. Watson will be gone in 15years tops, gambling will provide revenue till we all die.

Also, you don't think Ridleys suspension was an effort to change player behavior. Dude got a death sentence for shoplifting, they're absolutely trying to nip this before it starts

The gambling billions aren't affected by a football player playing a parlay.  Come on.  Legal betting has been around for ages and no one cares or even knows if players have been laying bets for decades.   Supported/partially owned/encouraged/NFL sanctioned betting is just a ne way of doing the same thing.

Just like drug testing has done little to curb NFL PED use (like gambling, only the dumbest players get caught) nor has it affected the "billions of dollars" rolling in before or with legal gambling, none of this really matters.   The money will always be coming in.  People (on this site especially) have assumed the game is rigged anyway----yet they simply cannot get enough of the NFL.  This will never change.

1 game wouldn't toll the contract.  But either way, 1 game would never happen.

His cap hit is $55M every year after year 1, so it's hard to say what they will do.  The cap is going to explode, so they very well may do that, but reducing Y2 to increase the others isn't going to help THAT much.

Couple reasons.  The option for the Browns to do so may already be part of the contract.  It’s getting more common and it would make sense for it to be in this contract.  It also saves effort by both the team and agent.

On Watson’s side, he’d get his money sooner and the money moved to the new signing bonus would not be at risk if he were to be suspended again.  Also there’s no downside so why fight it?
