We don't know all of the parameters of his relationship with the Bills or with his agent.  Maybe the salary reduction was too much and his agent said let's test the market. If what they are looking for doesn't pan out, then who knows. He may be willing to come back to be part of the Super Bowl run at the rate the Bills offered.

Beane is a master at being patient and open with players and not much was said about Klein's departure and fit for the defense.

At any level, one thing we know for sure is that they want competition in every position. So if he's willing to come in and compete it doesn't matter that they drafted 2 LB's.  Spector was a 7th round pick and is not a lock to make the roster.  Bernard should make the team, which leaves Dodson, Giles-Harris, Lee, Matekevich and Smith all fighting for roster spots, along with Klein should he chose to return.

I personally think Klein is better than the rest of them and his closest competition is Dodson. Matekevich is special teams, but that doesn't mean he's a lock either.

Can you name a single time Brandon Beane has outright cut someone instead of restructuring them and then brought them back in the same offseason? Especially after spending a Day 2 Draft Pick on their replacement.

They clearly wanted to get younger and quicker there. We kept 5 on the 53 last season. The only change is Bernard for Klein. Younger, faster, cheaper, with upside, and someone who provides more in the coverage ability department.

If they wanted Klein instead of Dodson or Matakevitch, they'd have kept Klein, not re-signed Dodson to a new deal, and/or gotten rid of Matakevitch instead.

Matakevitch will be here for his Special Teams. He's one of the, if not, the most important player on that squad. It's why he wasn't cut or even restructured when they were looking to clear cap space.

If they choose to keep 6 this season, the final spot will be a battle between Baylon Spector (who already took Klein's #54), Marquel Lee, Andre Smith, and Joe Giles-Harris as depth that probably wouldn't dress on Sunday's unless there's an injury.

He is Milano. The Bills like Matty so much they got themselves another one.

I don't get it...does everybody think Milano is undersized? Seems like he is well-sized for his position and for what he's asked to do.

E J Gaines?

Buffalo Bills (second stint)

On March 25, 2019, Gaines signed a one-year contract with the Buffalo Bills.[13] He was placed on injured reserve on August 10, 2019 with a core muscle injury.[14] He was released on August 18.[15]

On April 1, 2020, Gaines signed a one-year contract to return to the Bills.[16]

On August 2, 2020, Bills general manager Brandon Beane announced that Gaines would opt out of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[17] He was waived after the season on January 29, 2021.[18]

I said in the same offseason. As in cut and then brought back a couple months later. Coming to an IR injury settlement and then bringing them back the following season when healthy is not comparable.

We are very concerned with size here but how big is Matt Milano?

Bernard is about 10 pounds of NFL muscle from comping to Devin White. They both put of the same bench press. White's 4.42 beats the 4.59, but Bernard edged White in 20yd shuttle and 3 cone drill. So he has the short area quickness of an elite NFL MIC.

If he plays at 230, I think he can play MIC. But the plan seems for him to be the #3 LB and backup both Edmonds and Milano.

An interesting question, when a true 4-3 is called for, would they move Edmunds to SAM to take advantage of his size?

I was thinking this in a 4-3 under set, that having Tremaine with his length setting the edge. Then people got in an uproar about the idea. People who may not know what 4-3 under looks like. But anyway, in base 4-3 looks he should stay at mike based on the roster. But playing on the outside shoulder of the tight end in under looks may be an interesting wrinkle tor Tremaine to use his length. They ran this a lot on on McDermott’s Panthers teams, not so much here.

Beenard definitely seems like he gives them a chance at more 3 linebacker sets.

I think the well-hashed debate of Edmunds moving to what amounts to an EDGE position (4-3 under SAM LB is ON the LOS) typically concludes that the player in question is NOT a fit for that role based on his demonstrated inability to blitz/attack downhill. He does not get off blocks well. We know this. Therefore, deliberately pitting him against the offensive line/TEs on a play-by-play basis seems...UNWISE.
