Citing one undersized player who has excelled at the NFL shows that it can be done.  It doesn’t mean that being undersized isn’t a concern.

He has good speed and quickness, but not sure excellent speed and quickness. If he plays fast, that is important as well.

There are many Lbs that play right around 230lbs. The one I cited is the best in the nfl. Fred Warner maybe the 2nd best plays around 225-230lbs.

Aaron Maybin was the best player for his size. Sack master.

Aren’t third rounders the hardest ones to work out and always the last to sign?

Exactly my first thought.

Glad they got the tough one 😆 out of the way early.

I see the vision McDermott is going for with this pick. I think Bernard will mainly be used as a blitzer this year. Once White is back in his usual form we can man up against both outside WRs and let our improvec front 4 wreak havoc in their one-on-one matchups. Hyde and Poyer will do their usual thing. That leaves the 11th man, in this case Bernard or Taron Johnson, free to do anything we want. Bernard was a blitz specialist at Baylor. He fits into that role better than Johnson. Johnson will mainly play in coverage. So I foresee Bernard and Johnson splitting time on the field.

3rd round picks are usually the hardest to sign, but a lot of the so-called experts thought Bernard was a reach in the 3rd round.  This is likely due to his size.  Perhaps that's why he was easier to sign than the typical 3rd rounder.

I smell Keith Ellison all over again.

Ellison had a scent? You got a lot closer to the man than most of us.

I get a Coy Wire vibe myself, but I'm looking forward to seeing him on the field.

Can he jump out of a pool?

You act like D1 Guards are only 6 ft 250 lbs… but those NFL guards will be too much for him. The kid can play, you never know until you get to the league.

The staff will use his strengths and play to those. He had 20 Tackles and 2 sacks in his final game, against those small guards at Ole Miss an SEC school.

yeah, no. I’ll believe it if I see it. Special Teams if he even makes the team.

From everything i've read and seen, he seems like Matt Milano's clone. If he can reach his potential, it would be a massive upgrade over AJ Klein.

A different kind of player. Once Klein found his niche in this defense his play improved dramatically and he made some big plays.  At a reduced salary, he'd be worth a roster spot.

It's a great point.  I just remember have butterflies before the first MNF game against the Pats last year because of the weather... and then Klein is a last minute scratch because of COVID, and those butterflies changed to a pit in the bottom of my stomach.   We really did miss him that game.

Go Bills!

If a reduced salary was in the works for a Klein return, they wouldn't have cut him. He'd have been in the group of players we brought back on a paycut/restructure. I don't see Klein as the type of player to turn down a pay cut in lieu of a release to test his market. Whatever we'd have offered him on a restructure will surely be just as good or better as whatever he'll sign for elsewhere. And we wouldn't have drafted two LB's.

I hope he balls out for us, but drafting AJ Klein's replacement in the 3rd will always be an unsexy pick.  Did the Bills run a big nickel package at all last season?  Taron Johnson is a great slot corner so taking him off the field always feels like a bad idea.

I think we are going to see some differences on both sides of the ball this year. I don’t think they will change the core philosophies, but last year’s film won’t help 2022 opponents as much as they would hope.
