Different field goal holder?

Recommended Posts

Why can't Araiza learn the holding job?  He doesn't have experience since he was punting and placekicking at SDSU, but it doesn't mean he can't learn to do it competently before the season starts.  He's got 3+ months to work on it.

Also, guy made 96/97 extra points during his career and was 22/26 as a kicker back in 2019 (not so great last year).  That's a nice insurance policy should Bass ever get nicked up during a game.

If the dude cant figure how to hold he doesn't deserve a roster spot.  I think the team just wants to make sure Ariza does all the small things required to be great.  Not just bombing balls.  Ig isnt everything but it looks like he is doing the work needed.

Was thinking about maybe the opportunity is there, to use one of our other special teamers: Kumerow, Stevenson, or Taiwan could take on the PK holder duties.
I recall that Tasker used to hold at for at least a couple years? And Frank Reich did it too?

was just thinking if that is such a concern for “Punt God” , there should be other options…

Does anyone on here know if anyone else on the roster have previous experience as a holder? I know some of you follow college football too…

As mentioned here and in other posts on this topic, there are likely no position players who have any experience as a holder.  You are referencing the NFL of 30-40 years ago with Reich and Tasker.  After Reich left Chis Mohr, the Bills punter was the holder for Steve Christie - so the switch to punter happened over 26 years ago.

Sorry if I missed it, but who is saying that its “ such a concern “ for him?

Has he said anything himself that he is struggling to learn it ?

Doesn't matter. The Bills aren't kicking any field goals this year. All TD's all the time.

All followed by 2-point conversions?

The thing that I find most annoying about this craziness about holding is that Araiza is not the first K/P combo guy coming out of college. Those guys learned how to hold. He will too. I get being worried about hangtime and stuff like that. This discussion continues to make something out of nothing and there seems to be a new post on it every couple of days. Araiza has big hands, is super athletic and was a DB in HS. It is extremely unlikely that this will be an issue.

Maybe Matt Barkley?

I'm a big fan of using the backup QB to hold for kicks.  It opens up all sorts of possibilities.

Barkley is doubtful imo because he will likely be QB3 and won’t be activated on game day

If they are going to carry 3 QB's then Matt Barkley can do it. He won't see the field as QB3, so get some use out of him. He knows the system, seems smart enough to pick up any new nuisances of the offense relatively quickly where he can also practice holding and placement of FG's.

Outside of the points of change in practice times precipitating QB's no longer doing that role league wide, Matt Barkley won't be on the 53.

We'll carry Josh and Keenum on the 53. Barkley will be on the Practice Squad, taking over Davis Webb's role last season.

Thanks for correlating the CBA rules changes on amount of practice time, to why the punter specialists are always the holder now. I had not noticed that “all” the holders are now the punters - but couldn’t recall a recent one that was not.

I still think if a team was looking for an edge - having a speedster or a guy with a good arm being the holder - would be a way to get an advantage, and complicate other team’s preparations.

CAN WE ALL TAKE A SECOND AND PAUSE... SERIOUSLY. STOP WHAT YOURE DOING AND LET THIS STEEP.

Our current biggest hole on the roster, is the FG Holder 😆😆

This is like hearing Paris Hilton complaining that she had to drink a Dasani once lol glorious magnificence
