Behind the scenes: Bills draft room

Really great insights just from watching.

Look at Beane's intensity.  He is completely locked into what he's doing.   And he doesn't even ask McDermott - he hears the trade offer, picks up the phone and says "we'll do it."  THEN he tells McD and presumably the Pegulas what he's doing.   Surely, he already knew that McDermott would be happy with the pick.  Didn't have to check.

And Elam's reaction when he realized that (1) he's going to the Bills and (2) that they traded up for him.   Bills must have been high on his list, and for good reason:   A chance to start from day one on a Super Bowl contender.

Great video.  Thanks for posting.

Not sure if this was happening at OBD during the live shots, but some of the war rooms were way over the top in terms of hugs, handshakes, fist bumps and high fives after making a pick.  It seemed more ridiculous especially for Day 3 picks. 😂

This video says it all.  Dude has a notebook at the Combine of how each receiver beat him, techniques they used, and how he will counter that technique next game.  How do you not move up to grab him?  Interesting that they were talking about "points".  Good to know all those draft "points" charts aren't just so much bull####.  Great look inside the inner workings of the draft.

With the snippet from the pre-draft interview, no wonder Beane told him he knocked it out the park.

Seems like he's into the process of his own accord, no surprise they felt good about his 'character'.

I think it was interesting that the guys who were just doing a quick review of the tape, were in no doubt Elam was a guy who would fit well for us.

Indicates that he was pretty well up on their board, and that Beane was not messing about when he said that need, fit and value, all came together to get the pick done - even at the cost of the 4th rounder.

Also pretty ridiculous the chart had it at a 4th and 6th rounder to move up 2 spots (with Bills losing 5 pts).
They didn’t maximize their value in those 2nd round trades, ended up losing points, but at least one of those 6s landed Araiza.

They cut out a lot so we don't know what was being discussed behind the scenes. But it's clear that Beane is in charge of the draft process.

Anyone noticed they used Pro Football Focus.  A lot of PFF haters will be angry.

Also I think McDermott  got a little chubby when Kaiir broke out the notes. I’m not even joking. 😂

Yes!! That look on his face 🤣

Definitely would be interesting to see the unedited version.   Everything we hear from these guys is that they collaborate on everything, so if we saw ten or 15 minutes unedited, I'd guess that Beane was prowling the room, talking to people.  I don't think Beane made the decision without a lot of input, but I was interested, as you, in his decisiveness.  No fear.  Just answer the question and make the call.

Interesting also to see them using their draft value chart to make the decision.  Overpaying by literally a few points did not phase Beane in the least.  He wasn't going to let pennies get in the way of what he thought was the right decision.
