Lack of interest in former Bills starters in FA?

This off-season the Bills parted ways with 5 players who started the majority of the season:

Jerry Hughes (UFA)

Mario Addison (UFA)

Cole Beasley (Cut)

Daryl Williams (Cut)

Emmanuel Sanders (UFA)

All of these players are currently FA’s that haven’t been connected to many teams.  I know Sanders has talked about retirement but hasn’t made anything official.  I also read that Seattle took a look at Addision among a group of other DE’s.  Outside of that it’s been pretty quiet with this group.

Do you think the lack of interest in an indictment of where they are in their careers?   Or are they getting lowballed and are l waiting on better money?

I was surprised that Hughes, Williams, and Beasley have been available this late in FA/off-season

I think a few of these guys get picked up after the draft or during camp is someone goes down, and they are willing to play on 1 yr vet minimum type contracts

There's still a lot of big names out there in general and you'll see another wave of FA movement after the draft as teams look to still fill holes.

Regarding these specific Bills players:

Jerry Hughes (UFA) - will probably not get signed until around training camp and if he's willing to accept a minimum deal with no guarantees to make a teams final roster

Mario Addison (UFA) - i think he's in a similar boat as Hughes but actually had better production on paper last year.

Cole Beasley (Cut) - covid/political stuff is a red flag but pretty sure he'll end up with a contender soon probably just on a one year deal

Daryl Williams (Cut) - still wouldn't be surprised to see him back in Buffalo eventually but probably can get more money elsewhere

Emmanuel Sanders (UFA) - I believe he already said he's retiring so probably done unless another contender wants him bad enough.

Sanders was on NFL network a couple of weeks ago, and it was pretty obvious that he would be a good TV talking head.  I was impressed with how articulate he was. he has a SB ring.  I think he could become a Nate Burleson type.

Those were my thoughts exactly. Nate has carved himself out a nice little niche in the TV game. I fully expect Sanders to do the same as well.

The Hughes slander in this thread is salacious and unwarranted. Has been top 10 in the league in QB pressures for years. Doesn’t get big sack numbers and may not be one of the best EDGEs in the league, but the dude can still play. He’s certainly better than AJ Epenesa and Boogie Basham.

I've kind of thought the same thing.

Klein too.

I could see him back in Buffalo on a vet min deal as the insurance for a rookie replacement if they shocked us and traded Edmunds this weekend.

Even without a trade for Edmunds if the draft doesn't fall for them to take a linebacker who they feel could give them meaningful snaps in 2021 and Klein still has the "want to" then he could well be back.

All vets of a certain age. Sometimes those guys only get offered 1 year deals and they are holding out for more. It's tough when you have been making X dollars and someone tells you that you are too old so only deserve this smaller amount. Plus a lot of them probably have families and such, not interested in uprooting their entire life to go somewhere else short term

That right there.

On a one year deal, they can all help some teams.  But will they play for a much smaller contract.

They are in that "acceptance" phase right now.   "But I've got $30,000 grand in the truck, I am not taking eighteen five!"

They also just came off of two really good seasons...I doubt they want to play for Carolina, Jacksonville, Giants, Jets, etc.

Yeah. 33 is way too old for an edge rusher 😳

It is.  We should not be giving 33 year old edge rushers one year deals to see if they have anything left in the tank.  Now if the opportunity arises to lock up a 33 year old EDGE rusher until hes 40...well, that is an opportunity you can't pass up.

According to ESPN there are still several top 100 FA's available from multiple teams.  As you can imagine the theme is age and injury history.  Mnay of these guys will get deals after the draft and teams fill the final holes on thier roster.

Hughes will be back.  I would take Sanders back too but I think Bills add a WR in the draft.  At least I hope they do.  Having Davis and a rookie on cheap deals will give more cap room to pay Knox.  I would rather they draft WR than RB.

I think Hughes would have an outside chance of being brought back if the Bills trade a guy like Epenesa during the draft or before the season starts. Otherwise, that probably won't happen.

There might be a small chance of Sanders coming back only if the Bills don't draft a WR......but even if they don't draft a WR, I don't see it as a lock they bring him back, only a possibility.

@JohnNord here's my take

Age at start of 2022 season

Jerry Hughes (UFA)  34

Mario Addison (UFA)  35

Cole Beasley (Cut)  33

Daryl Williams (Cut)  30

Emmanuel Sanders (UFA)  35

Average age is 33.4 years.

No one is signing a UFA age 34 or 35 when they count vs the Comp Pick formula which explains away Hughes, Addison and Sanders being available still.

As for Beasley and Williams, the reality check of what they were making and what now is being offered will likely make them wait until camps open and someone goes down and a team needs a starter caliber player.  Then their asking price will go up again slightly on a short term deal.

The way Sanders was talking on FMFB I think he’s ok with not playing or in no hurry to do so.

Would like AJmKlein back also.  Thought he was pretty good.
