LABILLBACKER Posted January 25, 2022 Share Posted January 25, 2022 Alot of guys today on LA sports talk shows agree the current OT has to change. That game last night needed to keep going. Most say just play an additional 10 min OT. You can't decide it on a coin. Something like 10 of the last 11 playoff overtimes have been decided by a TD from the coin winner. In the meantime, playing defense is still a requirement in overtime and ours went missing. In baseball, the defensive team cannot intercept a pitch or force the short stop to fumble to get back on offense before the opponent scores. In football, they can. I still prefer what the NFL does over college. There’s no perfect solution. I still can’t believe so many Bills fan are complaining about OT rules. The game never should have gone to OT and everyone knew the rules going in. Complaining that we lost because of a coin flip is embarrassing. In my opinion, the Bills failed to win the game because they wasted drives in the first half not getting points. There was one three and out where Singletary got a good gain on first down and the Bills couldn't convert. I don't think Allen threw a pass on that "drive" -- I think if the Bills had played the first half like they played the second half, they'd have had a 10 pt lead going into halftime, instead of being lucky it was still tied. Thank you. *break* Regarding OT rules, I get the concern that letting both teams play could lead to a never-ending story. Much like the soccer analogy that was used, that's why they give one additional period and then penalty kicks. Besides the fact scoring is less likely in soccer, they've already been running for 90 minutes before OT. In football, have to consider most times the players that have extended physical abuse/chance for injury, have to play the next week. So there needs to be a limit. I'd ask for one minor change. Both teams get a shot. If it's still tied after that, go to the current rule. (Next TD or defensive score ends it, or FG if the other team doesn't score.) Very possibly it doesn't change the Bills-Chiefs game. Chiefs score a TD, Bills score a TD. Game still tied, so reverts to current rule...Chiefs score a TD, game over. I complain, AND also solely blame the Bills for blowing the game at the end of Regulation. I would complain regardless. Same as the stupid NHL Offside challenge rule. If it goes for or against the Sabres, I loathe it and turn the game off if it happens. Personally, I like some variation of the NCAA rule. But since one of those possessions was only 13 seconds remaining it's a complete choke job by the Bills. We will never get over this.
