Big week, thought I'd start a Patriots thread just to get us going!

As you all know a Villanelle poem has...

- 19 lines

- 5 stanzas of 3 lines each

- 1 closing stanza of 4 lines

- with a rhyming scheme of ABA, ABA, ABA, ABA, ABAA

- line 1 repeats in lines 6, 12, and 18

- line 3 repeats in lines 9, 15, 19

Let's do this!

I can't wait to beat the Patriots.

They are so very hated.

I think they are......those idiots...

They'd like to be...so...rid of it

Our rivalry scares them so

I can't wait to beat the Patriots.

No longer do they win Super Bowls.

and making spirits low.

I think they are those...bowls...those idiots.

Football is so much...

...

...

...this was a mistake.

What the hell was I thinking?  It's just that everyone was starting a Patriots thread and it seemed exciting and a good idea and I had FOMO and I just...

...and it's ripping off the other poem threads, so I thought, "what's the harm, I'll just whip up a poem in Villanelle style," because it would be so easy...idiot.

Moron.

I'm sorry.

I don't want to be around anymore.

Yes.  Yes, you are. 🤨

Do a 'Vanilli style'.  You just appropriate something, and claim you wrote it.

A Villain, NFL

by Scott Campbell

You never meant anything to me anyway.

If I twist my wrist and thrust it down,

I flick my hips and slip away.

If I smash my forearm into your grill,

this is how I get my thrill.

You never meant anything to me anyway.

I am just a player, playing for fun.

But when I begin to play for money,

I flick my hips and slip away.

Sometimes, brutality and reality collide.

Brothers and players stand side by side.

You never meant anything to me anyway.

Well-off fans and super-rich owners,

to the players, are nothing but donors.

I flick my hips and slip away.

The players always give their all,

but always are expendable.

You never meant anything to me anyway.

I flick my hips and slip away.

But this is my favorite football poem, by Pulitzer Prize winning poet James Wright. It was written a long time ago (1963) so some of the language has dated, but it says something a little sad, a little scary, about why people are football fans.

Autumn Begins in Martins Ferry, Ohio

BY JAMES WRIGHT

In the Shreve High football stadium,
I think of Polacks nursing long beers in Tiltonsville,
And gray faces of Negroes in the blast furnace at Benwood,
And the ruptured night watchman of Wheeling Steel,
Dreaming of heroes.

All the proud fathers are ashamed to go home.
Their women cluck like starved pullets,
Dying for love.

Therefore,
Their sons grow suicidally beautiful
At the beginning of October,
And gallop terribly against each other’s bodies.

Go Bills.

I have been here for 20 years and I believe this is the best post I’ve ever read.  Bravo!

Well, I'm certainly never one to shy away from a poetry challenge.

Chicken wings, hotdogs, oysters on the shell

Thermoses filled with hot tomato bisque

The tailgates will display an epic story to tell

Highmark stadium is the Bills citadel

The weather in Buffalo will be quite brisk

But the mood in the stands will gather and swell

The Bills’ season has been a high-speed carousel

The rewards will come with serious risk

May this game be the Patriots*’ season death knell

They lie, and cheat, and shuck so well

With pitifully little more than a tsk tsk tsk

From the league, the media, and Roger Goodell

May the Patriots* offense flounder, pell mell

From the moment they call heads or tails on that disk

And may Groot cleanly ring Mac & Cheese’s bell

Belichick* is the evil genius of the NFL

That bastard’s earned his asterisk

May he, Handyman Kraft, and the Pats* go to Hell

Dang, it’s hard writing a football villanelle…

You are too kind, Sir.

I was just aiming for it not getting locked.

I figured if I didn't put in the word "Beasely" or the phrase "Hitler was pretty good to dogs" it was going to fly under the radar and survive for at least a bit.
