2021 a 1989 Redux?

In 1988 the Bills surprised by winning the AFC East with a 12-4 record and everything looked rosy heading into 1989. 1989 arrives and the Bills start quickly at 6-2 only to limp home 3-5 in the regular season. They still win a lousy division at 9-7 but lose their first playoff game. 2021 is beginning to look eerily similar to 1989 and the Bills could win the division with a mediocre record like 9-8 or 10-7. The good news is that 1989 was just a temporary blip and we know what happened the next four years.

Could be but every season is different.

Teams have figured us out and Oline is garbage. McDermott needs to get the offense straightened out and we need Brown and Knox back

Could be.  Did think due to cap limitations this  past off-season they were still weak in certain spots and were going to need another season of roster changes.

Not sure if they figured us out or just very bad play from O-line

They aren't bickering yet.  It's always worse than it seems.  Some real soul searching is going to go on and I haven't lost my faith in this team ending the year as the #1 seed.  You'll never see the offense play as bad as it did today.

But if the line could keep the heat off Allen, would it still work?

Is it that we can no longer pass block?  Is it the Tampa 2 or teams have figured out we can't hold anyone off? At least not with Brown out.

Sadly…This team is totally overrated.

I disagree. They have had some very good games and have 5 wins to their credit. They are injured in areas that they have insufficient depth. There is too much talent for them not to turn this around.

It may be that over-achieving in 2020 resulted in a bit of a over confidence on the part of Beane and McDermott and they didn't take a hard enough look at the roster deficiencies.

The other thing too was resigning all their potential FA, i.e. Milano, Mongo, and Williams.  At the time they were applauded for it, in hindsight may have been better spending money elsewhere in particular WRT resigning Mongo, and Williams as opposed to signing a FA lineman.

May have been for the amount of money they had available couldn't likely sign anyone better than these two.  Though may have been better off only signing one and drafting a rookie lineman for the other spot.  Actually the did kind of do this in drafting Brown, Doyle, and Anderson however don't think they planned to need any of them to play this season barring injury.

People applauded Milano and Williams which still look like good moves.  Nobody really cared one way or another with Feliciano.  Most including me were quite pleased he got Morse, Butler, and Addison to return on lower contracts.

Beane's big fails are on Epenesa who is doing nothing, Basham, and Doyle.  Without Allen, Beane's draft picks are fairly pedestrian.  His next best pick is probably Knox who was just starting to emerge along with Bass and Oliver.  Basham and Doyle are doing nothing to win now.  He's done better in the trade market which was why I was hoping he would spend some future draft capital to win now.  Really disappointed but there is a lot of football to be played still.

Doyle's a 5th round rookie, being disappointed in him is rather un-fair.   Even Basham, he's hardly been active on a team that is sitting 3 D lineman out every week.  You could argue that he should be active instead of one of them, however that's up to the coaches.   however he's sitting behind two of their DE who were both 1st round picks, one is who was a 2nd and Addison was undrafted, but does have many year experience under his belt.  The fact that he's not beating them isn't really that surprising.

It's like a comment I read earlier from someone who was disappointed in Sweeney.  The fact that a 7th round pick is even in the league in 3 years is actually impressive.
