Hyde and Poyer are the only over 30’s I would bet on being with the team next year. We really need our last two draft classes to come on and to hit big on the 2022 draft class.

And we better start drafting corners and safety. I like poyer but I do believe Hyde has fallen off the guy is invisible every game especially win we play hi flying Offense when we need him the most.

They have actually gotten younger the past couple seasons..........McBeane's rosters have always been among the league's oldest.

Whether they get any younger or not probably depends on the highly invested-in young players they have taking another step.    If, for instance, AJ Epenesa keeps playing like he only deserves 40% of the snaps instead of 60% then they might need to keep (or buy) a veteran pass rusher etc......if he's a beast they can take a chance on a younger player to rotate with him.

Good point about Epenesa. I do think it’s way too early to tell with him. A lot of pass rushers who turn out to be good players need time; there’s so much technique and expertise that goes into the position. It’s kinda the opposite of RB. Except for a handful of freaks of nature and the Watt brothers (and JJ is a freak), the best years tend to start at year 3 or maybe 4. Melvin Ingram, Zedarius Smith, Haasan Reddick, DeForest Buckner, and Shaq Barrett are good examples: https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/I/IngrMe00.htmhttps://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/B/BarrSh00.htmhttps://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/S/SmitZa00.htmhttps://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/B/BuckDe00.htmhttps://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/R/ReddHa00.htm.

Just look at Reddick. It took him a while, but he blew up last year and had 1.5 sacks in game one last week.

It’s kind of a mid-career to even late-ish-career position in terms of peak. Indeed, Bruce’s technique and conditioning by 1995-1996 were outstanding, making him virtually unstoppable. I know you disagree, but I believe his best, most complete football was played in those seasons because he was an absolute demon against the run by then too.

Thanks for this post.

Respectfully, I never thought it meant much.

I noticed the Chiefs are only a few spots "younger" than us. I think that good teams often have a balance of youngsters and veterans.

I'm guessing that Hughes, Addison, Star, Klein, Hyde, Poyer, and Emmanuel Sanders are the ones driving the overall team age up. It would be one thing if we really WERE an older team across the board, but I don't think that's the case. The Bills feel like a pretty young team who happen to have a few key contributors aged 30 or older.

Beasley.  Taiwan Jones.

A. The difference between oldest and youngest teams is pretty small: youngest (25.1) oldest (27.0) so we are actually right in the middle of the pack

B. This takes into acct the entire roster. A more indicative stat might be average age for starters.

C. This does not take into account Standard Deviation. Two teams could both be exactly 27 years on average, but one could be 100% of the players are 27 and another could have equal # of players from 21 to 33. Clearly the age profile on these 2 teams is quite different

Good thoughts! It’d be interesting to see if just counting starters moved the needle at all.

According to the Buffalo News, the Bills have the ninth oldest roster. I wouldn't have thought this because they seem like a young team. When you think of the faces of the franchise, it's a little surprising that the Bills are one of the older rosters.

The oldest roster was not surprising. It was the Bucs.

It’s not a huge shock. I know we call the team “young” but we aren’t. This FO have filled a lot of holes through FA. Basically the entire OL sans Dawkins, plus most of the WR room.

Jordan and Poyer are FA pickups pre Beane. Hughes, Star, Klein,  and Addison are all up there in age and seeing significant playing time.

They have a nice mix of veterans and young players. As someone else said Beane's draft's have to start producing more.  Oliver and Davis looked good, Bass looks solid, and Knox did what was asked of him. Now Edmunds, Epenesa, Ford, Moss, and the rookie DL have got to produce this year.

I like Beane. I think he’s don’t a good job of building a team. I think his predecessor was better at building a roster. 10 times out of 10 I’ll take the team guy.

Our depth chart is old, especially for key contributors and starters. Our starting WRs average age is 31. All last year we talked about how an aging Star L. would be this teams saving grace for 2021.

Our best players, sans Allen, are previous regimes picks or FA. Tre, Poyer, Hyde, Hughes, Dawkins, and Milano. Are all the previous FO.

I love me some Josh, he is the shinning star in the draft classes. I think Davis and Oliver are going to have great careers. And I think Edmunds should stick around but only for the right price. But they have to do better at getting draft picks to make a bigger impact.

I think Hughes could also be on his way out

He is a free agent after this year so I think it’s much more likely than not that this season is his last as a Bill.  They have not extended him and they invested a first and two second round picks in three DEs.  Seems like the writing is on the wall.

Agree that it can take years to develop pass rushers.   That wasn't my point.  You can't simply assume that young veterans who haven't produced in multiple seasons will get MUCH better at key positions.   They would likely want to have proven insurance......someone they can trust make plays and be that 55%-60% guy in the instance of this DE rotation.

I’ll worry about next year, next year.  I don’t expect Addison, Hughes, and Star back next year, but that’s a next year off season conversation.  Not worried about it in September.

Hey Virg! Hope you’re well.

Do you think this based off of his play or is it just a gut feeling?

I think he could be back on a one year, team friendly deal.  We know McD likes his leadership.  If Groot does well, there won’t be a justifiable reason to pay him to stay.  We have some big contracts potentially coming up.

McDermott was here and definitely played a hand in all of those except for   Hughes.

This happens every year.  We’ll shed some as we draft or pick up in FA more.  I’ll worry about that next February.  I think the obvious ones will go, and the ones likely to stay are Beasely as we have him under contract through 2022, and Morse who will turn 30 after the season, and we have him under contract as well through 2022.  Addison, Star, Hughes, and Sanders will probably go.  Again, this is an off season thing, and I’m just concerned for beating the snot out of Miami today.
