Border officer: What's your brand?
Me: Alexander Keiths

Border officer: Nice choice. Enjoy your brief visit to Canada

They usually ask me if I have any guns in the car?

I went to Niagara Fall August 2019 for the first time since I was a kid.  Stayed at the Seneca Casino Hotel. I had no vehicle and asked the concierge the easiest way to get to Canada. She said “walk!!”  GTFO!!  So we did.

On the way over.

Border dude:  will you be bringing back any alcohol?

Me: does in my belly count!  😂😂😂

Border dude: 🙄

I made many a trip to Ft. Erie for Brador before concerts. Now (before the border lockdown) I would got to the Beer Store to return empties and the Duty Free for the new beer purchase.

OMG!  "Brador!" Haven't heard or thought of that name in several decades.

That was always thought of as the champagne of Canadian beers back then, as far as I remember.

I also used to like "Molson Special Dry" for a while.  I remember when it was a brand new offering from them.  That was probably 35 years ago!  LOL

Did you ever taste this stuff?

I wonder if it's any good.

I bet it's not, but it's worth buying for the can as a keepsake.

I did go over into Canada last night and picked up a case. Haven't had any yet (waiting for it to get nice and cold). I'll crack open a can tonight and make a post about 1) my review of the beer, and 2) my experience with crossing the border both ways in this Covid world we are living in.

So here it is. My review of Rush Golden Ale, and my experience with crossing the border both ways in this time of Covid.

First, I'll talk about crossing the border. (Always highlight the positives).

I registered on ArriveCAN Saturday Morning. I was a little worries considering there are a series of questions about where you would be for the quarantine period.  There was an option to select "I have no where to quarantine", so I selected that. I answered the rest of the questions, and I was accepted to be allowed to cross the border. On Monday morning (the day I crossed the border), I got my Covid test at Walgreens. Pro Tip: if you are going to cross the border, do it at a box type pharmacy (Walgreens, CVS, etc). They submit the cost of the test right to insurance. All other places you have to pay upwards of $150 for the same test, with a receipt in hopes that insurance will reimburse you. BTW: I tested negative for Covid.

Now the time to actually cross the border into Canada. There was plenty of commercial truck traffic, and not one car. When I pulled up to the inspection booths, 3 lanes were open and only one car. I pull up, and I ask the border office in Canada if I needed to wear my mask. Her answer was no. I was looking for the code that is given to you when you register on ArriveCAN, and wouldn't you know it? I can't find my ArriveCAN app on my phone! The agent replied, "Oh, you don't need to worry about it. I have all your information right here". I was asked the standard questions, are you brining firearms, alcohol, cannibus, over $10,000 cash, etc. Then she asked to see my negative Covid Test. She read it and her exact comment was "Perfect! This is exactly the information we need to see.". I am cleared to proceed, and it is the first time in Canada since February 2020.

After meeting my friend who procured the Rush Golden Ale for me, I drive back to the US. I crossed into Canada at the Lewiston/Queenston Bridge. I crossed back into the United States at the Peace Bridge. The overhead signs as soon as you hit the bridge say, "Masks required at booths". I pull up to the Nexus lane that was open in the US (Not in Canada). Standard questions commence. And after a brief stop, I am cleared to proceed into the US. For both directions, it was a painless process.

Now to the star of the show. Rush Golden Ale.

A fair amount of my friends in Ontario have had this, and have liked it. So I was excited to have it.  I opened the can, took a sip...

This stuff is crap!

It has a strong bitterness to it when you taste it. I generally don't like IPA's. And although this is not labeled as an IPA, it was the most bitter IPA like beer I've ever tasted. The bitterness stays with you well after you swallow the beer. I actually had to pour the half can left down the drain. It was that bad. A big disappointment.

Perhaps you need to educate your palate? 🤔

So when we visit your house and you offer us one of these, we're not getting the royal treatment.

You are most likely right I may need to educate my pallet. I know what I like, and I didn't like this.

Ahhh the good old border days. There were quite a few times I got back into the US from Canada when I'm quite sure I wasn't awake or cogent but was definitely underage. There were other times I remember sitting in traffic with my buddies practicing the questions so we could try to give the answers without slurring too badly. I'm sure we all sounded like we were having strokes and yet we always got back home. These were the days when you could "correct" a NY license with a colored pencil and a steady hand. We'd cross the border uncorrected and then sit in the parking lot and magically become as old as we needed to be to enter whichever establishment we were trying to enter. The ballet at 16 was a mind blowing experience.

We used to call Brador’s “Bradley’s”.   I think the only reason we bought them was because that was the strongest beer you could buy.   In hindsight I think it is equivalent to Colt 45.  My buddies and I went to The Sundowner when we were sophomore’s at UB.  I think we were all 18.  I remember sitting down at one of the horseshoe tables and my head exploded the first time a girl danced two inches away from my face.

Unintended “side effects” force LCBO to recall Henderson Brewery’s “Rush” beer from shelves.

Ontario’s LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario) announced yesterday that due to widespread customer feedback that the over consumption of Henderson Brewing’s new “Rush” beer, named after the iconic Canadian hard rock trio, led the almost entirely male consumer base to quote Ayn Rand in an unusually ethereal falsetto, air drum with a newfound and inexplicable virtuosity, and show up for work draped in dragon print silk kimono robes, the crown corporation would temporarily be pulling the product from its shelves pending further investigation.

“While no one is disputing Henderson’s claim that the 2021 beverage offers both a ‘deliciously and unnecessarily complicated blend of hops, yeast and spring water,’” said LCBO spokesperson Marissa Rosenthal on Monday, “the internal struggle that drinking this beverage created between a newfound love of trees and a desire to move to a neighboring subdivision was simply too much for some.”

No word yet if a similar fate awaits Henderson’s forthcoming line of Saga Grapefruit Radlers or its Max Webster Cider.

A good friend of mine sent me a care package, and included was the two other Rush beers.

I just opened Moving Pitchers, the blonde Belgian Pale Ale, and OH MY GAWD!!!!! What Golden Ale lacked, Moving Pitchers more than made up for it! Absolutely fantastic!!!
