Question about QBs off season training

Recommended Posts

So we've all read about Josh's off season work with Palmer and zeroing on things to improve and machanics. I also read about Joe Burrow working on specific fundamentals and mechanical things. But then I read Baker Mayfield, nothing more than getting together with his WRs to throw the ball and work on chemistry (and possible party)

My question to those who follow the off season more intently than I do is do you see/ hear some QBs working harder the others?.....ie fundamentals basic stuff more so than others?

I heard stories of Sam Danrold working with Palmer and taking his advice, run one or two plays and say "yea I got it" while other work to nausea.

So, is there an underlying indicator in the off-season on how some of these two, three, four year QBs work to actually determine whose gonna have a long career and be the next elite and who will be the next Ryan Leif?

I've always said it would be an interesting article (tracker) of who is working out with who/where at least for QBs. Like we hear that Palmer worked with Mahomes, but that was like 1 time I think and Mahomes works with another personal coach. I'd find it interesting at least to get to start knowing the names of the "QB Gurus" out there.

A strong work ethic is an obvious need.

I'm fine if this just becomes a *****-on-Baker thread....

Then again, some guys work just as hard and it never bears the desired fruit

It's not intended to be a s*** on Barker thread, that was just a few very vague examples, and Im wondering if there's more specific examples pro or con.

i don't think it matters much. has big ben, Brady, brees manning ever worked tireless with a QB "guru"  i dont think so.   watching film and being a student of the game is more important than being obsessive over mechanics.  most of these guys are pretty accurate when they are comfortable and trust what they are seeing.

if you can diagnose and process what is going on with the defense and how your offensive play can beat said scheme on any given play is the most important trait for a QB.

Regarding Brady and Brees had a QB coach they worked with for years. His name was TOM HOUSE. Brady especially has always put that work in with his team (not football team)

The NFLPA: “We practice too much.”

Also the NFLPA: “OK guys. There is no practice. Everybody go pay out of pocket for a private coach”

I am glad some are working on fundamentals. I’m glad Baker has his WR group together. The secret sauce is doing both.

I have no idea why the CBA has balked at no pads, no contact, in house practice with film review. Only to basically require that every NFL player to pay for another coach out of pocket.

I think it’s something a lot of guys keep private. Allen is different, because he had serious issues, and people didn’t think those would change. So Palmer gets some attention for the work they do together. Outside us Bills fans most people never hear of the offseason work with Palmer. I would be willing to bet that almost every quarterback in the league has things setup for the offseason and personal trainers and coaches. We don’t hear a lot about it cause….. Does anybody care who Gardner Minshew is training with?

Brady? Yes. He worked every single year with a guy on his throwing fundamentals.

The same guy, Tom House, also worked with Brees, and was extensively responsible for helping him recover from his devastating injury.

Cutcliffe is most famous for helping Peyton learn to deal with his shoulder injury, but he was his coach at Tennessee and Peyton had visited him before the injury.

And Peyton was famous right from college for working relentlessly on his mechanics, all the time, and every year.

What is you’re assertion by asking this question?  It sounds like you are claiming the greats like Manning, Brady, Brees didn’t need off season coaching, but others have corrected you in they all have personal coaches and there are others where they went to baseball coaches to learn how to slide.

As you can see from results Allen has had continuous off season coaching and went from 53, to 59, to 69+% in three years.

My question was just that, do all QBs work with private coaches each off season on basic fundamentals and weakness equally, alot have answered yes citing successful QBs. But how about the marginal ones?

I would think they all do it now in the 80's and 90's it would be the exception rather than the rule now its the opposite.

i mean i suppose im just not up to date on what everyone was doing in the offseason.  i mean house also worked with case keenum, RG3, andy dalton, marcus mariota, blake bortles,  tyrod taylor.  matt barkley. so its not an end all be all.

i guess if i had to choose i would say sure work with someone if its making you better.

the truth is we dont really know what baker is doing on the offseason.  He was in better shape last year and by all accounts even better shape this year.  he changed his footwork and base last year with alex van pelt. i am guessing  but i would bet his completion % goes up a decent bit this year by just being in the same offense 2 years in a row.
