League officially announced it will move to a 17 game schedule starting in 2021

I'm in favor of adding a 17th game by reducing the Pre-Season by one game. Mainly, because I love the game. That said, I think the most I would support is an 18th game, but not giving up another Pre-Season game because it takes those three games to get guys more into game shape and to evaluate the players which are on the fringe of the roster.

Part of the attraction for the NFL is that each game has real, significant meaning so putting more games on the calendar is tricky for that purpose in my opinion.

My favorite NFL stat of all time is this:

The first QB to pass for 4000 yards in a season was Joe Namath, back in '67 for the Jets. And that was the last time a Jets QB exceeded the 4000 yard threshold!

The streak is at 52 years, and as one who revels in the Jets' misery, I'd like it to last at least another 52. But if the greedy owners keep adding games to the regular season (and 18 is right around the corner), 4000 gets that much easier to attain for even below average QBs on below average teams.

I'm a huge football fan.  I love the NFL and watch as many games as my schedule allows for.  I'm also against this move.  For many of the reasons articulated above, and perhaps my own spin:

1) It dilutes the product.  Enough is enough.

2) It increases the change of injury to players, particularly for those teams preparing for the playoffs.  Look at the Bills WRs down the stretch this year, as an example.  They were really banged up at the end of the season and it hurt the Bills a lot in the playoffs.  Imagine if they had to tough it out for one more meaningful game to secure playoff seeding?

3) It throws off statistical comparisons to prior seasons for purposes of calculating records

4) As much as I love football and miss it during the off-season, I have a family and other things in life.  I target "after the Super Bowl" as a time the year to start on some weekend projects that were put on hold, travel (maybe a ski trip that I don't want to take during football season), spend more weekend time with the kids, start my diet (I eat better and drink less when it's not football season - how about you?), etc.  Pushing it back a week or 2 is disruptive for me personally.

It's not the end of the world, but I'm against it.

1. It shows no care whatsoever for player safety or the quality of the games. As it is, by week 17 of the NFL season, many teams are the walking wounded and bear no resemblance to the team that began the season.

2. It makes 43 years worth of statistical records useless.

3. There is no evidence that fans actually WANT an extra week of football. Indeed, some polls that have been taken showed that fans were AGAINST expanding the season.

4. There are plenty of ways to continue to increase revenue other than trying to fix what ain't broke with regard to the schedule length.

5. The NFL would become the only major pro sport to have an odd number of games instead of an even number of games.

6. The NFL is the greatest sport there is. It's massively popular and rakes in billions of dollars. Why does the league continually insist on tinkering with it, when it's already the most popular sport in the country just the way it is?

-- I'm all for getting rid of 1 or 2 preseason games. I don't like expanding the regular season. I don't see the need for it, and I worry that the NFL will just go on adjusting and tinkering with things in perpetuity with a league that doesn't really seem to need the alterations. I'm concerned that the NFL's never-ending greed will eventually mean the downfall of the game that we all love so much. They just don't seem to know when to leave well enough alone.

Fair enough on the records. That's always awkward but this isn't the first time in history that the number of games in a season has changed. Baseball didn't always have 162 games. We adapt.

On player safety, I consider that argument kinda null because this wasn't unilaterally imposed on the players, it was negotiated for in the CBA. If the players were staunchly against an extra game, they wouldn't have given the owners the option.

So, we play the NFC East this year and then play Washington in the 17th game. Does this mean that we play Washington twice ?

Bills play the AFC South and NFC South. Washington is the only NFC East team they play this year.

He said the extra game would be 1st vs. 1st place.  I've seen no reports so far that those games would take place in week 17.  My guess is we'll still pry get a divisional opponent the final game.

Yes 1st place vs. 1st place.

I'd guess you're right that the last week would be a divisional opponent.  The wording was just murky and sounds as though it could be a week 17.

But King seems pretty definitive on the specific opponents of each team and in the case of this upcoming season we get an extra home game and it's vs. Washington.

I've said this for awhile and I know I am in the minority, but there should be games labor day weekend and it should be the NFL's official kick off Holiday weekend.

YES, I KNOW...FAMILY PARTIES.  I HAVE A FAMILY, TOO!

...but the first weekend, with no work the next day...glorious.  Simply glorious.

Yes, this was a formality. Everyone has known since the CBA was ratified that the league secured the right to expand the regular season to 17 games, and that they were highly likely to exercise that option. Nevertheless, today it was announced that they definitely WILL be exercising that option, beginning in 2021.

Personally, I HATE that this is happening. I don't see any reason for it other than money. I get that the NFL is a business, but they're doing JUST FINE, thank you very much. There are many other ways to continue to increase revenue without lengthening the regular season. There were even polls done in recent years by PFT and other outlets asking if fans were in favor of expanding the regular season, and the majority of fans voted that they WERE NOT in favor of it. Yet here we are. Ugh.

"Maybe it’s just a slow news day.

Whatever the case, a report from ESPN that the NFL’s owners are expected to add a 17th regular-season game this week is not news. Anyone who has been paying any attention to the NFL over the past few months knew that it wasn’t just “expected” to happen, but that it is happening.

The only question left is whether the NFL will reduce the preseason to three games or to two. The owners are expected (am I doing that right?) to reduce the preseason to three games."

It's just a formaliteeee!!!

Some more preliminary information if interested.  I apologize about the crudity of these tweets.  Do we really need a MNF WC game?

Nice job NFL for creating relationship tension by scheduling the Super Bowl on a day I could some wanting to celebrate Valentine’s. 😂

I agree, and I’d be more adamant about this if I were a season ticket holder. I’d prefer the addition of an extra good weather game earlier in the season. This setup just adds another cold weather game.  I’m only interested in attending January games in Buffalo if it’s a playoff game.
