There are some people on this board who clearly don't understand how NFL contracts work.

The Saints aren't avoiding the salary cap, or doing anything brilliant/genius that other teams can't do.

Taysom Hill's contract is basically a 1 year deal, with the cap hit spread over two seasons.

About $128 million in his contract is Monopoly money.  It's fake and he will never see it.  If the Saints decide to keep him around past 2021, the current contract will be voided and renegotiated.  And if he's not brought back, they will have $8 million in dead money.

So far this offseason, the Saints have been forced to release about 8 contracted players (mostly starters) from their roster.  That isn't counting the retirement of Drew Brees, or the multiple free agents they will be unable to re-sign.  They were also forced to restructure the contracts of another half-dozen players on the team, and needed to franchise tag Marcus Williams to keep him on the roster (instead of giving him a long-term deal).  All of this was done just to keep them from having a negative cap number when the league year starts Wednesday afternoon.  They still have no money to sign new players, and have pretty much exhausted their ability to restructure existing contracts.

At the end of the day, the Saints were able to extend their window as a contender until Brees finally called it quits.  They did this through a mix of excellent drafting and pushing back the cap hits on contracts.  No doubt it was a very smart strategy by their front office.  But the idea it was never going to catch up with them is nonsense.

Good synopsis.  Unless NO can extend Williams or their OTs, then about all they have left is to release or trade Lattimore.  I think they’re trying to work a trade to get some draft capital to help the rebuild.  They should be able to get something for him, but it won’t be a lot.  And teams might just wait out his release too.  The Saints also have to give Brees a 6/1 designation.  His contract was designed for that to happen so that was always the plan.

And to think there are people that believe that JAs market value can’t go up if we wait.  Utter nonsense.  His market value has already gone up since the debate 2 weeks again.  Whether or not he wants to capitalize on that is a different story....but his market value has already risen.

35M for Taysom Hill.  I’m a fan of the guy, but 35M already?  Meh

Yup agree. With Dallas and way they did that contract for Dak recently, it surely went up then lol. I remember reading a month or so ago that they were planning Josh's in the summer sometime. Don't know if it will go up much more between now and then though at this point with summer right around the corner.

But definitely seem true that the longer it's put off the higher it goes.

That's 2 million more than they paid him for 5 years on his rookie contract.  And how will they pay Brees's replacement as starter?

this contract (ie the 12) was signed a year ago as an elite role player with possible qv upside. It was an over pay but that discussion is old history.

Sure.  Couldn’t hurt from a motivational standpoint either.  But we all know what it really is.  And it’s not a 4 year, $140M extension.

it’s not so much motivational, as common sense negotiation. Everyone knows taysom is going to give 110%.

taysom sees himself as a starting qb. To get him to tag 4 years onto the deal to achieve the accounting trick, it has to be reflective of how he sees his upside.

if he plays as expected (not an entrenched starting qb) he gets his freedom to chase the next opportunity. If he shocks us, the saints didn’t screw him with a deal where the starter has a 4 year $20m contract and is holding out.

it looks bizarre or like made up money but there’s plenty of rhyme and reason behind it

It's really not that big of a deal. It's just a one-year thing that lowers his cap hit as much as possible for this year, while pushing the majority of it to next year. He'll have no contract after the 2021-22 season, one way or the other. NO will be taking an $8 million cap hit next year for the ability to make some cap room this year, Taysom gets all $12 million in his pocket right now. Works for both of them.
