That’s be strange...that defensive line got manhandled twice against the best team in the conference last season..... Star is going to change that? Doubtful.

Is this a reading problem, Scott?

He didn't mention just Star. He mentioned Epenesa, that he might easily improve a lot. And he left out Oliver, who when not injured has improved consistently and who they are clearly hoping, reasonably, will also take a major step forward this year.

It's not all that doubtful at all. Against the run, Lotulelei's impact was huge, and his absence caused a chain reaction, affecting others. Without Star, we were a small DL, easily overpowered. With an extremely large space-eating dude at 1-tech, they look different in total.

Epenesa got a lot better late in the year and there's every chance he also can play better yet next year.

He also left out the fact that ... hold for it ... it's March. Chances are they will make a few changes before the season. Depending on how things go they might even have a more normal offseason and a chance to work together and unite better than they were able to do till halfway through the season last year.

This defense was right on the edge of elite, maybe even there, in 2019 with Star there. They clearly took a major step back. Star was a large part of the reason why. But there is a good chance there will be improvements elsewhere as well on that DL.

I think you overvalue the matchup vs KC, as apposed to being a good football team.   Priority number one is to be a good football team.

The easiest way to be a good football team in '21 is to bring back the core of the '20 season (15-4).   Not only is it logical from a record point of view, but continuity helps culture, and for an oline to gel.

I agree with you in hoping that something can be done to improve the pass rush though.

Entire OL returns intact

2 DL take pay cuts to stay

Star coming back

We have done a lot of work on our DL/OL's to think that the pick at 30 is auto going to be put here........

Some places I would look at now

Corner

Running back - If Naji falls

Ike Boettger has not been signed yet and he is an EFA.  If you consider Cody Ford starter I suppose but Ike started 7 games + 3 playoff games.

Thus far we are last year minus:

Offense: Brown, Kroft; and possibly Nsekhe, Winters, Roberts, McK, Yeldon, Barkley

Defense: Norman, Jefferson, Murphy, Marlowe

Special Teams: Still unknown on Bojo and Roberts

Add's: Star

While I am happy to bring back Milano, Williams and Feliciano it could turn out not to be the best decision. This is the tough part of being a GM. Could you have more easily replaced some of those guys and then added better pieces at other positions? It is hard to predict this stuff. There does seem to be a number of guys that could have helped the pass rush available. Would losing Feliciano or Williams have been worth affording Dupree or Barrett? Could we have double-down on WR and grabbed a Galloway instead? Let Milano walk and instead bring in another CB like Peterson? So many scenarios and these are all the tough calls. Obviously last years team was a top team in the AFC. But we are still chasing the Chiefs while also trying to hold off teams like BAL, CLE, IND, MIA, TEN. Beane seemed content rolling the dice on the squad we have and hopefully can add a few pieces in free agency and then have a solid draft.

We did cut Jefferson and then did not re-sign Murphy.   So currently we have a major hole at DE in terms of Depth Chart

People under estimate this. Our DE's were already light last year and now we are down two more. Easy to say, who cares they sucked. But we are now down two guys and both Beane gave significant contracts not that long ago. We drafted a guy in the 2nd that did not get on the field much. This will need to be addressed as there is no way you can enter the season with Hughes, Epenesa, Addison, Johnson, Cox Jr, Love...
