The causes of rhabdomyolysis are very clear: it's caused by over-using a muscle to the point where the muscle cells die and rupture, releasing sufficient myoglobin into the blood that it can overwhelm and damage the kidney. Short-term and in some cases long-term loss of use to the affected muscle group can occur. It's become increasingly common with the "Extreme Fitness" trend of CrossFit Boxes, in which poorly-informed trainers design workouts that overuse the same set of muscles and the "workout partner" setup engages peer pressure to "keep up" past the point of fatigue. When 13 players on one team are hospitalized at once, it's extremely probable that their coaches directed them to perform an inappropriate level and duration of repetitive muscle exercise for their current level of conditioning. This is a giant Red Flag to placing this man in charge of an NFL S&C program. Players need to have strong trust that if they follow the guidance of their S&C staff, they will be enabled to improve their level of play, not to have their bodies (thus careers) and internal organs placed at risk. It's a double flag when the program is the Jacksonville Jaguars, a team that is only a short time out from leading the league in Player Grievances, in part due to practices of requiring players to rehabilitate off-season at the team facility in violation of the NFL/NFLPA contract. https://www.bigcatcountry.com/2019/12/16/21024854/nflpa-report-jaguars-accounted-for-more-than-25-of-all-grievances Maybe it's not his fault, but it happened on his watch, while he was leading the program, and surely there is some qualified person who does NOT have this on his resume. There was actually a neat study published based on this incident. The conclusion was that they performed a type of extreme squat exercise too soon off of a long break (it was actually the first day back after about a month off!). It was an exercise that the team had been doing for a long time, but they usually trained for a longer period before attempting the exercise. I heard from a very reliable source that Curtis Samuel will 1000% not end up in Jax (many have connected him there in FA), and that it will be curt’s choice. Nothing to do with the above though, but it doesn’t help. Should be noted that there's an Iowa alum on the Jaguars roster, Greg Mabin, who was one of the players who spoke out against Doyle.
