Before he can get to tweaking the roster, however, he needed to complete the task of finalizing his coaching staff on offense, defense and special teams, and he's now done just that. The team formally announced Meyer's complete staff a few days after Super Bowl LV, and while it's mostly garnered praise from football minds who see it as a strong foundation for Meyer's inaugural season at the professional level, one hire in particular instantly created a slew of raised eyebrows around the league -- namely Chris Doyle.

His departure from the University of Iowa last June was marred with controversy when Doyle, then a 20-year veteran of the program and highest-paid strength and conditioning coach in the country, was put on administrative leave following a list of African-American players alleging Doyle treated them negatively and unfairly because of their race. His new job under Meyer will be the first since the Hawkeyes divorced him, and it's already drawing criticism.

I do not follow college football that much and I do not believe either head coach Meyer or Doyle has played or worked in NFL and they will find it very different.

The groups with their own self interest are very different than those in NFL and they will need to deal with the NFLPA which they did need to in college.

One another thing I noted:

Sanjay Lal - Wide Receivers Coach

Former WR coach (NFL): Seahawks , Cowboys, Colts , Bills, Jets, Raiders

Only former Bills coach and do not recognize any of the coaches as former Buffalo Bills players.   Sanjay Lal IMO was a very good coach and was replaced by a very poor one by Coach McD.  Chad Hall, while inexperience, does appear to be a good one.

This was a stupid and arrogant hire by Meyer. He tried to defend it and just two days later is walking it back. Not a good look for a new regime.

Seriously.  Of all the the S&C coaches to pick from, he picks the one with the most baggage.

Urban, welcome to the NFL.  That organization supposedly is toxic.  One of my closest friends has lived in Jax for 30 years and a number of players over the years live in his neighborhood.  Pat’s (my buddy) home is somewhat of a fun home as a lot of people go to their backyard are as they have a pool and grill pit on the weekend evenings.  Needless to say there are a few adult beverages consumed.  He’s had players over and there were more than a few sideways comments.  I don’t know how true that is, but coupled with the public comments by Fournette and Ramsey, it’s possibly true.

Meyer has a lot of work to do there, just like Dungy had too fix the dysfunction on the Bucs in the 90’s.

Not ChampaBay. 🤪. Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.  Speaking to strictly football, Flores is doing a decent job improving their team, but a couple of years away.  Tampa’s teams are well managed.  The Rays do a lot with a small amt. of $, and so does the Lightning.  The Bucs as well once they changed Mgmt, and Coaching have steadily been turning around their team and with all of that talent on the Bucs, they still $26.8 mil. in cap space.  They have a ton to try an extend so like most SB teams, their going to lose some of the talent.

Anyway, I know you’re kidding so wanted to innocently rib back.

How crazy is it that Tampa was so close to having all three of their major sports teams win their respective championships for the same colander season??

I don’t think this gets talked about enough.

Probably a good thing it didn’t happen. All of that celebrating would have caused a real... strain... on the city.

Chris Doyle held his position as head S&C coach in Iowa from 1999 to 2020.

Of far greater concern than complaints about untied shoes or cornrows was this, which happened on his watch in 2011:

https://abcnews.go.com/Health/university-iowa-football-players-hospitalized-muscle-condition/story?id=12780810

Quote

Thirteen University of Iowa football players remain hospitalized after becoming ill with what the university says is a little-known muscle syndrome called rhabdomyolysis. Rhabdomyolysis occurs when muscle is destroyed and the pigment in it that makes it red, called myoglobin, gets into the kidneys and can damage them.

At a press conference on Wednesday, a spokesman said it's unclear how the students developed the condition.

"Unclear how the students developed the condition" is complete and total bull####.

The causes of rhabdomyolysis are very clear: it's caused by over-using a muscle to the point where the muscle cells die and rupture, releasing sufficient myoglobin into the blood that it can overwhelm and damage the kidney.  Short-term and in some cases long-term loss of use to the affected muscle group can occur.

It's become increasingly common with the "Extreme Fitness" trend of CrossFit Boxes, in which poorly-informed trainers design workouts that overuse the same set of muscles and the "workout partner" setup engages peer pressure to "keep up" past the point of fatigue.

When 13 players on one team are hospitalized at once, it's extremely probable that their coaches directed them to perform an inappropriate level and duration of repetitive muscle exercise for their current level of conditioning.

This is a giant Red Flag to placing this man in charge of an NFL S&C program.  Players need to have strong trust that if they follow the guidance of their S&C staff, they will be enabled to improve their level of play, not to have their bodies (thus careers) and internal organs placed at risk.

It's a double flag when the program is the Jacksonville Jaguars, a team that is only a short time out from leading the league in Player Grievances, in part due to practices of requiring players to rehabilitate off-season at the team facility in violation of the NFL/NFLPA contract.

https://www.bigcatcountry.com/2019/12/16/21024854/nflpa-report-jaguars-accounted-for-more-than-25-of-all-grievances

Maybe it's not his fault, but it happened on his watch, while he was leading the program, and surely there is some qualified person who does NOT have this on his resume.

Prediction:  the new strength  coach will not be black....he can't  be seen as caving to external pressure.  Oh well....   As for criticism of the "good ol boy network"...that exists because of the benefits of instant confidence/rapport that a known person brings to the supervisor when bringing in somebody he knows.  Its not racial, its just easier and quicker.  A lot of detail doesn't need to be covered..its understood with that kind of hire.

Jmo, but that team is screwed long term... it all stems from ownership, and the Meyers hiring was not a stellar choice.

That doesn't really mesh with white coaches with less experience and results being chosen over black coaches. Urban Meyer probably thrives on familiar faces because he's never been anywhere without questionable practices. College coaches control their players lives and are given god level powers at universities. This is going to be a rude awakening for him with the players having more power.

The idiot here is Meyer. It didn’t take too long for his narcissistic self to shine through in his new gig.

“Urb, this is the NFL, not like the usual big time and isolated-from-any-control college programs you normally lead. No boosters to cover for you here.”

How many black FAs will choose to play for him? Answer, little to none. They should fire him now if they really want to make a statement.
