losing Shaq, Lorenzo, Phillips and to a lesser extent Star......

I can't complain too much about this season folks it was an awesome season all in all and it was fun to watch it unfold. I see a lot of finger pointing going around at different

position groups on the team as well as blame for the coaches and I get that completely and agree with some of it. I feel like we didn't play our game and played completely Vanilla

because we feared the chiefs(that's on the coaches for sure).  All in all imo losing the above mentioned players made our defense lack the punch it had last year that caused

issues for opposing offenses and it's as simple as that. Why did Tre and our safetys and Lb's look average or worse????? Because they didn't have havoc being created in front of them end of story. Our offense is a real 3 down running back away from being a total juggernaut, our defense needs a lot to hold up their end of the bargain. We were a rb and a defense away from going to the big dance this year......Not too shabby ;)

Go Bills chin up guys and gals beanes got this

Um, you do know that we won more games and went further this year?

Point: halfway through the 3Q last year, we had a 16-0 lead on the Texans and said defense (that you imply wouldn't have cost us this season) gave up 3 back to back scoring drives, two of them 75 yard 8,9 play drives for TDs - and then another 75 yd drive in OT for the winning FG

Our D just seemed physically weak, especially the DL, but Edmunds and Tre too.  In that sense we did miss those guys up front.  Finesse football can get you a long way but the watching the game last night (and the KC/Tenn games earlier this year) you just got a sense by the 2nd quarter that the Bills were getting manhandled and didn't have an answer.  It's what i was worried about against Baltimore, but the D played a fantastic game, but even with that had to scheme around being the less physical team.  I'm not sure what the cure is here as we're not going to replace enough guys on D to change their nature but maybe move some guys around?  Who knows

We literally are undersized at almost every position.  So ya.  We are weak.

Ed.  Undersized.

Hughes.  Not the biggest dude.

AJ.  Undersized.

Murphy.  Undersized.

Milano. Undersized.

That's why we get bullied.

By next year, will be roughly 4th to about 7th.  We just had bigger cap numbers this year.

See my edited post above.  I would expect spending 51M on the DL would provide more than what we saw in 2020.

And i neglected to mention that the 51.7M was not inclusive of all of Star's renegotiated contract.

Yes, the DL didn't live up to expectations.  We'll get rid of Murphy and either Butler or Jefferson and bring in more.  I see at least one edge rusher type and 2 DT's brought in FA.  We are always going to spend money on the DL because we have a heavy rotation.

I don't care if our #30 pick is a 3rd down pass rushing specialist and that's it....we need to get to the QB.

No it didn't take 7 years.  Reid went to the AFC Championship game in Mahomes' first year as a starter.  They were limited under Alex Smith and made the change in 2018.

Yes, they'd assembled talent before that, but the NFL is about winning now.  KC has refined and tweaked that roster (trading Dee Ford for Frank Clark) on both sides of the ball.  This narrative that it takes years to reach the pinnacle of success is unfounded.

Umm, I didn't suggest that it will take 7 years for the Bills to be full-on contenders.  What I'm saying is that it's a combination of ownership > FO > HC > QB, and that once the foundation is in place, which it was for KC years ago, then you can swap in better pieces.  Consensus here earlier in the season was that 2021 would be the year that the Bills would make a run at it.

KC started refining and tweaking that roster *starting in its early years under Reid*, so 7 years ago.

The NFL is always about winning now, but the only "win now" team I can think of, who won a championship, and that's the Broncos w Manning.  And look where they are now.  Teams still take time to build, to retain talent, to bring other players in, to build a handful of core players, and this takes a long time.  It took the Seahawks 3 years, as an example, and they're still competitive.

For real. It’s like while I’m so disappointed this dream is over, I’m not mad in the slightest. They laid it all on the line and a dude who was questionable all week was just throwing dimes like nothing. We were the 2nd or 3rd best team in the entire league and just lost to an all time great.

there is no one to blame or be mad at. I have never been more proud of a Bills team in my life. We have a bunch of warriors who loved each other. Mahomes is just a bad boy.

Lorax retired so not much they could have done there.

I went back and forth on this all year but at the end of the day I’m glad they did not commit to Shaq and Phillips.  I don’t think the defense would have been any better or worse with them staying.  Now Beane has more flexibility on the D-line.

Exactly.  They were overpaid and Beane was shrewd not to commit.  They would’ve been retained at a better price.  How much impact did each player make in their respective teams.  Was either one in Miami or AZ considered a household name and talked about all year?  The answer is no.  Star was an opt out, but in his case I understand.  He has a heart condition and did the right thing for his longtime health.

It’s funny last year so many on the board complained he wasn’t worth the $ etc.  Star will be back in the fall doing the unsung hero job.  By the fall, the vaccines being prescribed will be widespread, guessing I’ll have one by the summer.

This is why these draft picks are gold amd not to be traded away.  We have to pull it together with primarily the draft as we as well as many teams won’t have the $ for free agency.  Free agents are going to have to take reasonable $ or they’ll be dropped across the league.

OP, honestly, I don't know.  I don't think so, but again, I don't know.  The Bills D exhausted its opponents during that run past midseason.  No, they weren't the 2000 Ravens (or one's comparison of choice), but they did well enough.

The O crapped the bed last night at times, and coaching led to conservative play, I'm assuming because of the various miscues.  Once the KC train got rolling, the game was over.  I'm not rewatching this one, but coming out of halftime, I knew it.

That 2nd quarter was the end. KC is so good they can play disinterested and still beat you by 10. And like the old Laker teams they can turn on a switch if they're bored. Tampa doesn't stand a chance. I'm still convinced the Bills are the 2nd best team in the NFL. The problem is KC is 3 levels above everyone else.

Buffalo spent 51M on DL this year, tops in the league by far and because that's what the HC wants.

It's resource allocation like this which gives me the impression McDermott and Beane like building depth and giving players PT who buy in to the HC's process.

That strategy doesn't work when you play the league's best as evidenced by last night.  Who knows if McD will acquiesce, but Buffalo's success this year will not go unnoticed by other teams.  Now is the time to adjust personnel and scheme to meet the challenge of competing with KC long term.

I think it's a little more than that.  McD's scheme on the D line appears to be rather than trying to get a superstar lineman, we're going to rotate 8 to 9 deep and wear you down.  By the 3rd quarter we'll be beating you, even if it's our backups as they are still pretty good players.

That idea seemed to work for the most part in 2018 and 2019, but not in 2020.  Whether it was lack of an off season for the new players to fully be comfortable in the system or they signed the wrong guys, not sure which, but didn't get the value for what they spent.

Maybe the secret is pickup or sign guys on one year deals so they want to go out and prove something, like Phillips and Shaq last year and maybe Williams on the O-line this season.  Will be interesting to see if they would even try to sign a high end pass rusher if they could or again stick with the come at you in waves concept.

I will say this philosophy seems to be prevalent across all sports of resting players.  Look at the NBA giving players games off, pitchers never pitching anymore on three days rest, etc.  Compare that to Bruce Smith, when did he come out of games?
