Which AFCE Competitor will draft a QB First?

Recommended Posts

I could make an argument/present a realistic scenario that each of our AFCE competitors should be drafting a QB early this year.  There is only one Trevor Lawrence but there is a handful with great potential (Fields, Trask, Lance, Wilson) that will be available  after.  Miami and New England also could both be in the D Watson sweepstakes with their draft capital.

The Bills imo are the only team in the AFCE with a solid bona fide QB of the future.  I wont be shocked if at year end next season all our AFCE competition have three new starting QBs.

Miami has a wealth of draft capital.  They pick 3rd in both the 1st and 2nd rounds as well as #18 in each round.   Tua has been, imo, after his fortunate winning start has been underwhelming and the Bills really exposed him.  Will they have Fitz back next year to continue to mentor him and bail him out?    Lets see if they think they have seen enough and will take a cue from the Cardinals a few years ago and draft another QB high.

New York Jets.  Yes, Darnold suffered from woeful coaching on a poor team but he is now entering his fourth year.  His QBR rating has slipped every year and his passer rating was his lowest ever last year at a dreadful 72.7.  Jets can pick from all the remaining  QBs assuming Lawrence goes at first.

New England.   Does Belichek really want to hope he can find and develop another young QB at his age?    Doubt Stidham is the answer and will Cam be back?  New England doesnt pick until 15.

I tried to make a poll but but technical skills failed me.

J - E - T- S, Jets, Jets, Jets.  New coach will want his own QB.  Darnold will be a good chip in trade strategies.  They could get extra picks and have a 2018 Bills type draft where they address several pressing need via the draft.  Also helps them better manage cap long term

I think at the moment the Jets are more likely to draft one than Miami.

Just now, May Day 10 said:

Jets for sure.

Im thinking they go with Fields this year.

IMO New England might be more in play to again try to stitch it together with an existing QB like Prescott or Wentz

I think Miami doesnt undermine the Tua thing so quickly.

Wilson more likely than Fields at this stage I think.

I would draft a QB in qll 3 situations....if there were a QB available that I thought could be a face of the franchise.  If there isn’t, I’d look to package a bunch of picks and (Tua/Darnold) for Watson.  If I couldn’t get either of those done, I’d probably try and trade down with efforts to secure an additional 1st and picks for the 22 draft

I thought the same thing until I saw fields vs Clemson.  He put on a clinic that game.  I’ve never seen him play so well.  He was dropping dimes.

but then he missed a bunch vs bama.  Wilson vs Fields is similar to Baker vs allen in terms of physical traits.

I don’t think any of them take a quarterback round one. Maybe one of the later guys.
Miami I would expect to draft weapons and surround Tua with as many playmakers as possible along with a nasty rush game.
I think the Jets know they’ll be picking high again and I would expect will try to trade down and snag an extra pick for the following year while taking the best blue chip defensive prospects they can get.
New England I expect to play the free agency game or trade for someone a little more built to win now. Bill is old, I don’t think he can coach much longer and he wants to win now.

The best part about reading this thread is a reminder how the other AFCE teams all need a QB and we don't. "F" the Jets, Pats ,Fins. 6-0 in the division this year was sweet. To answer this thread I will say the Jets take Fields at #2.

Miami.  But it wont be  in the first round.

Miami needs to have a backup plan, and it would be nice to have 2 young QBs for Fitz to mentor.  Since they cant get rid of Fitz (insurance), but also arent going to play him anytime soon, may as well get max value for their money.

NE will trade for one somehow, or will draft one later than MIA.  Because . . . geniuses can find qbs late, and they dont like to admit that they need an  early first-round stud.

JEST will either (1) trade Darnold for another current QB (matt ryan, Matt stafford, Garrapolo (Saleh ties) and maybe Deshawn Watson, or (2) keep Darnold on his cheap rookie deal.  If he sucks under new coaching, they will draft a QB soon, but not this year.

So true. They will be chasing Josh for a decade. Who knows what happens to Darnold & Tua? Who knows if Fields is another failed qb from Ohio St. Cam is probably done so Bill will try to salvage his last couple seasons in NE by getting a retread? I guess my biggest fear is Watson coming to the AFCE.

Definitely don't want that to happen. Both the Jets and Fins have what it takes to make that trade.

-The Jets are a wild card.  Darnold was surrounded by a train wreck, so hard to judge him.  I think they either take a QB at 2 or trade back and build up the team.

-Miami should use all their picks to try to build a team around Tua.  He didn't look great this year, but I think its too early to give up on him - he definitely has talent and can help him with all their picks.

-I dont see The Pats trading up in the top 5 (or the Jets/Phins trading their pick to them)  But could maybe see them trading up to the 7-10 range or so if they like a guy.

-I definitely think the Jets an Phins would trade for Watson in a heartbeat, which is the only scenario that scares me - especially to Miami.   Hopefully Houston gives him the coach he wants and they work things out.

Disclaimer - I wanted Rosen over Allen, so I have no clue WTF I am talking about, lol

Jets, and I think this will be a win win for both the Jets and Darnold.

I'm curious where Miami goes with Tua and what NE does with Newton.

Newton is gone from New England, I suspect they pursue Jimmy G or Brissett and maybe draft a guy like Mac Jones in round 2 too.

I wanted Darnold over Allen so I also have no clue. Thankfully we have a GM who knows what he is doing.
