Shefter: Daboll favorite in LA

Dorsey has never called plays.  Not saying he can’t do it but I don’t think it should be a foregone conclusion that he’d be the next man up.

If McVay was calling plays in the NFL before he hit puberty, Dorsey is ready. I think its a natural progression for him at this point in his career. I agree though - no guarantees.

I'd think the Chargers would be a bit nervous about hiring another Bills OC.

Ken Dorsey come on down

I just hope they have to wait until the Super Bowl is over to hire him.

Most likely but you never know. The man destroyed the rookie passing records and didn't even play the first game and literally found out he was playing in the second game 20 minutes prior.

Just remember, if they're under contract we control that.

Can't they leave with a promotion?

Is this because our OL is inept at run blocking or because Daboll doesn’t know how to scheme for the run game?

We're not a committed run offense. It's just our philosophy. We were much better last year with much of the same blocking schemes. Just different commitment. No rhythm.

I think the only thing that could have kept Daboll here is if the Jets didn't beat the Chargers to the punch on getting Saleh. Saleh was lined up to have a 2nd interview with the Chargers as well. I don't think the Jets would have hired Daboll.

I'm willing to bet Daboll to the Chargers was in the works for weeks.

Not saying it wasn't but I also think it was Daboll's only real head coaching shot of the ones left. If the Chargers went with Saleh, I don't think any of the other teams left would have hired him

Yeah. The rule was passed last year that teams can't block other teams from interviewing coordinator positions. So take someone like Chad Hall or Ken Dorsey. Daboll can take them to be OC and the Bills can't do anything about it other than trying to get them to stay. Same goes for defensive coaches. If Daboll and Frazier get jobs we could lose more coaches.

Really? I'm not sure about that. Of all the jobs the Chargers job IMO is #1. Daboll had been listed as the #1 candidate available.

I don’t disagree.  C. Polian is 46, Dave Caldwell is 48, Tom Telesco is 48, an Daboll is 45.  They all went to St. Francis, and a couple of them played for John Carroll.  They must run in the same circles.  Daboll probably feels really comfortable with Telesco, and they have lots of talent both on offense and defense, most importantly Herbert.

Thus is a great call for Herbert, the Chargers, and Daboll.  I’m happy for him if it happens.  Not to be cliche, but I trust the process with McBeane.  If anyone doesn’t trust them by now after four years of excellent decisions, then I just don’t know what you need to trust their judgement whether it’s Dorsey, or someone else.  They will figure out who is the best fit for the organization, and the Pegulas are not meddling owners unlike others.

I was a little concerned for Daboll going to Houston due to their dysfunction, but it never came to pass.  I think Daboll could’ve done it and probably turned Watson around, but this one is so much better for him.

Think about it, he has a QB, an estimated $23 mil. In cap space, and the likes of Bosa, Allen, Hayward, Joseph, Williams, Ekelar, and James.  With a full draft of 9 picks, he is set up for a turnaround.  I like the Chargers when not playing us.

Good news for us is we just played so unless we end up in the same position, we won’t face them for three years.  We know at least next year we won’t have them to face.

My biggest question is how many coaches leave with him. Could be a few of them.

na.  I think most stay here.   we are a winning team.  I think perhaps Hall or Dorsey could go to be OC if they are not offered it here, but that’s about it.

The OP was asking how many coaches we lose that follow Daboll.  He can promote one to OC and take them.   I suppose in theory he can promote and take two (OC and DC), but I don't see him doing that.

So he can take one, unless we let them go.  It does have to be remembered that whoever the new OC is, he may want to pick his own staff or at least some of his own staff.

What criteria are you looking at to say "we were much better at the run last year with the same blocking schemes"

Last year we rushed for 4.4 ypa which was like, 13th or 14th in the NFL.  This year we rushed for 4.2 ypa, which is 19th in the NFL.

I'd call that "better by a small increment", myself, and attribute most of it to missing our starting RG half the season.  To this point, last year we rushed 465 times for 2054 yds.  This year, we rushed 411 times for 1723 yds.  If we'd rushed 465 times, we'd have 1953 yds, a whole 100 yds less.

I wouldn't call that "much better"

"Committed" may be a fair descriptor - we rushed 465 times last year to 411 times this year, which could be described that way, but I'd personally look at it more as our passing game is both more successful and more productive this year, so we had no reason to push more attempts from the same middling to mediocre run game we had last year.

Time for Josh to start calling his own plays...I think he is ready...

Are you serious?  We can barely get him to exercise a checkdown, and you want him calling his own plays?

Hopefully he stays. But this match made the most sense from the start.
If I’m Daboll that’s where I want to go- a loaded team with a good qb that can win now.

Without bad time management and situational game management the chargers would’ve been right there fighting for a playoff spot.

First thing I do if I’m Daboll is overhaul that strength and conditioning program. The chargers get ravaged with injuries every year.

Speaking of injuries what about the eagles never saw anything like it every year

The Bills can block requests to all the other coaches unless McDermott feels it is better to let him go.

Why is his ceiling lower ? He doesn’t run like JA otherwise he’s an mvp type talent.

Josh is currently discussed as a top 3 QB 29 other QBs are not.  Look up the word "likely" in a dictionary, and it will likely come into focus for you

I was wondering that myself.

Herbert is way ahead of Allen's first year.

do you honestly think Josh had nearly the same supporting cast his first year?

Wow someone disagrees with your opinion about Herbert and you don’t like it. This is a common opinion on Herbert. His rookie year set records. To suggest he doesn’t have a JA ceiling is not supported by the facts. He’s almost as good right now.

slight difference - one was let go and second would very much be a Bills OC if not for the promotion.

That said, I actually like Anthony Lynn. He is very good as a strategist. Just needs to improve his in-game tactics. Maybe hire an in-game calling situational specialist as an assistant and he would actually be fine as a HC somewhere after spending time as an OC. The Rooney rule will help him.

Anthony Lynn did a good job replacing Roman when Wrex fired Roman.  Just sayin......

Daboll and Herbert might work big time.  But, you never know....chemistry is an unpredictable thing.  Josh Allen is the biggest part of this years success and another O system, now, would have to be learned.....however, Josh is now big time NLF trained and will flourish whoever is OC.  I see a lot of continuity being maintained however.   I don't know how to do that organizationally, but that is what McD is hired to do.  Lets let him do it.  (Bean will help if asked, but its McD's staff)
