Who is your favorite back up Bills player of all time?

How about a little love for Butch Rolle! All he did was catch touchdowns. 14 consecutive receptions for touchdowns with the Bills. That stat will never be broken by anyone!

Play action on the goal line, the pass to him was a guaranteed TD.  Then came the day he dropped one, and he never caught another TD for the Bills.

Preston Ridlehuber

His name is actually H. Preston Ridelhuber.

A look at me post, but personal experience.

The week the Bills played the Pats that year, for some reason that I can't recall, they needed a place to practice for the week.

It was a well kept secret, but for some reason they chose Houghton Park.

Not my neighborhood, but within a long walk.

We heard a rumor about it, and went there, and sure enough they sowed up with big trucks and eventually players.

There was about four of us and Eddie  Abramoski asked us if we would file field goat attempts and get the balls back.

Of course we said we would.

We showed up every day and got promoted to passing out tape and other consumables before practice, and I got to be the guy who spotted the ball for the offense before every play.

Ridelhuber was the only player we didn't recognize.

Anyway, it says on Wiki that the play was drawn in the dirt on gameday, but I can tell you they practiced it at least three times.

They "paid" us with standing room tickets for the Pats game, and we saw the play and the touchdown.

For what its worth.

Yep - Best back up QB in NFL history. How many stress-related infirmities did he save by his mere existence?

Best backup in NFL history might be a little overblown

Earl Morrall was a career backup, who got a lot of time as a starter due to injury

Went to a few pro bowls, was an all pro as a backup, and won a few super bowls

His win-loss percentage and stats are way better than reichs

I voted for Roland Hooks earlier.

For the young ones...   It was Week 12 of the 1981 season.  We desperately needed a win against the Pats to keep our slim playoff hopes alive.  But our offense sputtered.   Only able to find the endzone once all day (an 11 yard Fergie to Hooks connection), we were losing 17-13 with less than a minute left.

The Pats faced a 4th and 2 in Buffalo territory and decided to go for it.  After all they had Sam "the Bam" Cunningham in the backfield - the league's best short yardage specialist.  If they made the first down, game over.  The Bills were out of time outs.  If they didn't make the first down, the Bills were unlikely to score with mere seconds left on a ticking clock.

The Bills D stuffs Cunningham.  35 seconds left.  73 yards to go.  We've got the ball - but very little hope.

Then Roland Hooks happens.

Here's the Youtube vid.  For a great Bills treat, just watch the end of the game from about 2:34 on.  Maybe the best 35 seconds of game time in Bills history.

Someone that was predominantly a back up and only spot starter.  So someone like Ryan Fitzpatrick doesn't count because he became a full time starter.

RIP big guy!

Easy, Frank Reich.

Do the Reich thing!

Frank Reich hands down. I did not like Jim Kelly as a kid so I loved any time Reich got into a game.

Really? Why didn’t you like JK?

Not asking defensively, just curious.
