I'm thinking of a person

Excuse me for not answering this, somehow I missed it.  Also I just figured out that if you reply to the person a little notice pops up to the person you replied to so that is the best way to answer.   I am a bit slow sometimes.  My wife debates the "sometimes."

Debates would be a step in the right direction for me.

He may be dead to you but he isn't dead.

Was he killed in an accident?

Nope, not an accident at all.  In fact his death was quite purposeful.  Necessary you might say.

Is he a writer?

Not as a profession, but he wrote a journal and a few letters that gained wide notoriety at the time.

This man once took aim at an engineering degree, but ultimately fell short due to various reasons.

Despite being a genius, it appears this guy could not hold a job or complete his education,  If his death was a necessity it was to make a statement or to keep him quiet.

The date is wrong or I would have said Lee Harvey Oswald, and we did just pass the anniversary date of the JFK assassination.

This is all pretty speculative because I really don't have a clue.

I didn't know where he was born but the Military info is off also, but he seems like the kind of guy that fits the rest of the description.  Perhaps the better question is:

What state did he die in?
