Please refer to @SDS pinned post

This is NOT a thread for general covid-19 discussion - state of the pandemic across the country, what death rate is currently etc etc etc

It is to discuss:
-NFL Covid Policy (with references, not your speculation about how they test or what you think they should do)

-Player test results

-How NFL covid results affects teams and games

NFL says starting Saturday, all teams must enter "intensive covid protocol"

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/30343474/nfl-memo-says-all-nfl-teams-operate-intensive-covid-19-protocols

Details of the intensive protocols include:

  • A requirement that all meetings be held virtually or in the largest possible indoor space, provided such space has been inspected and approved by the NFL and the NFLPA.

  • Grab-and-go meal service in team cafeterias.

  • Limited time spent in locker rooms -- less than 15 minutes per person per session, with sessions scheduled so as to minimize the number of people in the locker room at one time.

  • Masks or league-approved Oakley helmet face shields at all times in every part of the facility, including on the practice field.

  • "Double PPE" during medical treatment for the patient and the provider -- i.e., a player receiving treatment for an injury must wear both a mask and a face shield during that treatment and so must the doctor or trainer performing the treatment.

  • A limit of 10 players and five coaches at any one time in the weight room, regardless of the size of the room.

  • Thank you (+1) 1

Not during games.

Starting this Saturday, all NFL teams must operate under the league's intensive COVID-19 protocols for the remainder of this season, according to a league memo sent to teams Wednesday afternoon and obtained by ESPN.

Requirements under the intensive protocols, which 28 of the league's 32 teams have already experienced at some point this season, include virtual team meetings and the wearing of masks by all players and staff at all times while at the facility, including during practice.

There's a loop hole, here's the entire order....

https://www.governor.pa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/20201117-SOH-Universal-Face-Coverings-Order-Update.pdf

They can use face shields, attach them to their helmets. So if you're on the field, with your helmet on, you're good.

It's not just the helmet with visor, it's this special oakley shield that has alternating gaps

It's actually pretty clever.

But it's also not a huge deal to exercise in a surgical mask.  It helps a lot to use a mask bracket

https://www.amazon.com/Mask-Bracket-Oceantree-Accessories-Large-Adult/dp/B08CK6W57M/ref=sr_1_8?dchild=1&keywords=mask+holder&qid=1605744439&sr=8-8

You nail it in place with a couple pieces of "fashion tape"

It turns out a lot of the struggle to wear a mask during exercise is psychological - when it sucks into your face as you inhale, your primitive brain tells you to rip off that sucka that's covering your nose and mouth and impeding breathing.  If you have a bracket holding the mask away from your face, your primitive brain leaves you alone.

Half these guys wear masks when it’s cold out and they play outside anyway.

I’ve work a mask skiing and it was fine. I don’t think this is a big deal

If it's not a big deal why wouldn't the NFL have mandated the players wear a mask while playing? They have for coaches, refs, etc.

Correct, but the Pennsylvania mask mandate may require that - or the requirement may be satisfied by the Oakley mouth shield.

Wasn't Worley wearing some kind of face covering when he came in last game?

Yeah, that was a little weird.

It looked like he was wearing some kind of liner-weight balaclava over his mouth (or a buff styled to look like that),with a visor, but his nose uncovered.

First thing I thought was “aren’t they playing in a dome, it can’t be cold.” Then I remembered he’s probably doing it due to COVID.

Quote

The Raiders had no new positive COVID-19 test results on Thursday morning, according to a person close to the situation, and remain on target to get several several players on the COVID-19 list back in time for Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Defensive backs Isaiah Johnson and Johnathan Abram, defensive linemen David Irving, Jonathan Hankins, Arden Key, Maliek Collins and Kendall Vickers were all placed on the COVID-19 list on Wednesday as high-risk close contacts of defensive end Clelin Ferrell, who tested virus for the virus on Tuesday, joining defensive back Lamarcus Joyner, who was also placed on the list on Tuesday as a close contact of Ferrell.

All are eligible to return in time to play Sunday against the Chiefs, including Ferrell, provided they test negative over the next three to four days. But Ferrell is unlikely to play.

NFL insider notes: Bracing for COVID-19 spike

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-insider-notes-bracing-for-covid-19-spike-translating-the-49ers-jimmy-g-endorsement-picks-and-more/

The NFL is bracing for a post-Thanksgiving COVID-19 case spike across its players and personnel members that could throw the rest of the regular season out of whack.

That's according to multiple sources who believe the cases will only increase in the 10-14 days following the holiday. And it's what led to the NFL mandating all teams make the intensive protocol the default setting for the rest of the season beginning Saturday.

Allen Sills, the NFL's chief medical doctor, told reporters the league has been conducting genomic testing on those who test positive for coronavirus to see if they got it from a teammate or within the team facility. "We can look to see if there's any linkage between those and we're not finding it," Sills said, adding that in most cases the virus comes from community spread.

A high-ranking source told me this week that the "overwhelming majority" of these player cases of community spread originate from having people over to their house. "Contact tracing is showing it's having guys over to their house, sitting indoors," the source said.
