Leonard William.... Giants look to be out of it maybe we can get him for a 5th rounder...

Ngokwe. Jax looks like they want to tear down and sell. Is there a shot here?

The Giants sent a 3rd and a 5th for Williams.
The Vikings sent a 2nd and a conditional 5th for Yannick Ngakoue.

They’re not giving those guys away for nothing.

Williams has a $16M guaranteed salary per OTC, the reason he went for a 3rd and a 5th.  We have about $4-5M in cap space.

Ngakoue is playing for the Vikes, so I'm not sure why you're mentioning Jax in this context.  But he was basically a $12M 1 year rental.  His salary is $4M so we could afford him, but  it would have to be a great offer for the Vikes to move him.

Exactly.

One small correction, though, Ngakoue's salary is $8 mill. He's been paid 5/16ths of it. That leaves $5.5 mill still to be paid. We couldn't afford him without cutting elsewhere, and we'd be left with virtually nothing left under the cap to roll over, so that would leave us in even worse cap shape next year.

Also, we wouldn't be able to pay him next year, he'd almost certainly be a one-year rental.

So, very very unlikely.

Why wouldn’t we be able to pay Ngakoue?

Id trade for him if the FO views it as long term.

We can clear a ton of cap space by moving on from Hughes, Addison, Jefferson and Murphy after this year.

Id rather pay Ngakoue than Milano if it came down to it.  We likely won’t be drafting high enough to get an impact EDGE... we can find linebackers in the draft.

Going into next year with 3/4 of the starting DL being Oliver/Star/Ngakoue looks pretty good to me, and he would be a massive help this year.

Why would Minnesota trade him after just trading for him? Add in the fact he’s been their best player on defense this year possibly and they will have cap next year if they want to sign him up.

I don't think they would... just answering from the Bills perspective.

Minnesota expected to be a contender but instead has watched their season go down in flames .  Unless they are certain they can get a deal done with him next year they might cut bait.  Unlikely, but I guess that's the "why".

They traded a 2 and a 5 and he’s performed. Be a hard sell in the locker room to turn around and give him away. Unless y’all are wanting to give up a 1 or 2 and contract extension. Which I doubt anyone wants to do I hope

The Bills have no cap space to bring in players like these guys...

But as I've seen mentioned elsewhere, Dalvin Tomlinson from the Giants would be a good pickup at defensive tackle...he would be a cheap rental.

First, it's a good thread for discussion, thanks @Adamb412.

I tend to think if Beane does do a trade it's along the lines of what you propose @JustWinPlease.

There is a slim chance that Beane could free up some $'s and go for a "pricier" DL trade.  He could do some restructuring.

Players that would qualify for a restructure would be guys like Diggs/Morse/White.  I don't think Beane wants to do that but

depending on how bad they feel about the DL situation it could happen.

The other thing I thought of was just the roster make up.  If a trade is made it seems possible that Beane just cuts a player outright and

eats the money this year.  If he does that now it could clear some more space for next year if it's someone other than Murphy.

how did we end up soaking so much of our cap?  did we front load the cap hit of some of our big contracts in order to use it up this year, or have we just ended up over paying for crummy old DL guys and carolina LBs?

One of the highest paid DL's in the NFL.  Thankfully we have cap friendly outs this offseason for Hughes, Jefferson, Butler and Addison with Murphy coming off the books.

We should tons of cap space next year when Trent Murphy, jerry Hughes, and Harrison Phillips gone. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Micah Hyde and Cole Beasley cut also.

Cole Beasley is not going anywhere. Josh loves him and he is the best clutch possession receiver in the AFC.
