Figured out why I feel amazing as a fan currently... Sean McDermott is an elite head coach.

When McDermott came to Buffalo, it felt like a breath of fresh air. He brought discipline, a no-nonsense attitude and a fundamentals first approach to the organization that had just weathered horrific coaches. There can be absolutely no denying McDermott has the capacity to coach players up and make them play better, both on a technical individual level and as a member of a larger team. But what bothers me most about McD is that on Sunday(or, game day) he lacks killer instinct and has sub par game management/in-game adjustments. Are we stuck with a coach that cant rally the troops and deliver in big games? Where is the urgency from a defensive coach when his unit gives up 500+ yards? Where is the disciplinarian/no-nonsense McD who tells Poyer "that's not you, you can lead these men" after he mentally lapses on that penalty?  How concerned are you guys about this?

Figured out why I feel depressed as a fan currently... Sean McDermott is not good enough.

Belichick
Tomlin
Vrabel
Reid
Payton
Shanahan

These are the best coaches in the NFL... They either have next-level smarts or an elite ability to motivate players to perform.

McDermott is a solid playoff coach, but not a championship coach, I fear... So Bills fans are like, "We're 8-3! Enjoy it!" But I see a frustrating period of good-but-not-good-enough on the horizon for the foreseeable future.

And that's depressing. I am absolutely not of the "Hey, it's Buffalo; at least we're winning" type of mentality. It's championships or nothing. That is the life goal. And with McDermott signing a long-term contract, I almost feel as hopeless as I would if we sucked. If we sucked, at least there would be hope of striking coaching gold on an imminent hire. In this case, though, I feel like we'll just be a solid playoff team for the next many years, but not elite enough to win it all.

its his 4th season as a head coach and hes 3 out of 4 playoff seasons with the buffalo bills who couldnt even truly compete for the playoffs for 17 years before him.  id like to think this year he gets his first win and hopefully more.  Mcdermott is the least of my worries right now.

Tomlin, Vrabel, Payton, and Shanahan have two SB wins between the four of them.  Not sure why you're putting those guys in the same category as Belichick and Reid, and I'm also not sure why you think McD is somehow on a lower rung than them.

I mean, Tomlin is like the platonic form of "good but not great."

Hey man-- you need to keep your chin up.  We are a great team, and McD is a great coach.  If you aren't enjoying this season's success, then you're wasting away prime "fan" years.

As to the coaches you identify, it has nothing to do with coaching.  None of those guys win their SB without superstar QB play. Our chances of a Super Bowl rest solely on Josh Allen's hands.  QB's win Super Bowls.

It is just nonsense. McDermott has more wins against teams currently with winning records than any other coach this season. The three teams he has lost to are 24-9.... pretty sure that is the best win % of any collection of victorious opponents too.

If he loses again in the first round of the playoffs there will be a legitimate reason to ask if that is his ceiling as a coach but so far this regular season he is doing as good a job as any coach in the NFL and I include Mike Tomlin and the 10-0 Steelers in that.

Vrabel an elite coach? The guy who got pantsed by Zack Taylor?

Come on now.

The reason I say this about Vrabel is he clearly motivates that team to just come out and stomp people semi-regularly. They come up big in big games, and they just crush teams sometimes.

McDermott's Bills do not do this.

The other massively encouraging thing about McD is that he has shown time and time again the willingness to grow and change (ie. data analysis based game day decision making, cutting the chord early on a "mistake" player,  ). He is developing just like our QB is.

Wasn't Tomlin a so-so coach that many former Steelers wanted fired a couple of years ago?  Wasn't Reid the guy who was a TERRIBLE in game coach who couldn't win the game?  Wasn't McVay the future of the NFL who was instantly the best coach in the league (so much better than everyone else that anyone who had once had lunch with the guy should be given a head coaching job immediately)?  Coaching evaluation takes a long time...and certainly McDermott has shown enough to warrant that longer look.

They crush teams sometimes? So do the Atlanta Falcons should Raheem Morris be in your elite category too?

This was a week where obviously the team felt it was time to push the run game forward, and stick with it. In weeks past, if the run game wasn’t working, we moved away and let Josh throw it all over. I think it was good coaching this week to stay with it, as it needs to get going if we are to make noise in the playoffs. How many times do we need to apologize for winning every week? This is the first time the Chargers have lost by more than one score this year. I understand some frustration with some second half play calling, and a lack of aggression in the 3rd quarter, but if the PLAYERS on the field don’t turn the ball over 3 times in 7 plays, the score line could have been much different.

Vrabel is a meathead.  He inherited a playoff team. He then has two 9-7 seasons, and 1 playoff appearance.  Yeah, the Titans won some playoff games last year, but I think the jury is still out on him being a great coach (or even a good one).  If you recall, they couldn't fill their stadium for half the year, until they went on a late-season run.
