FO Analysis of Buffalo O-Line

Coach Tuesday

Recommended Posts

The Bills are one of several teams being featured in the weekly o-line analysis of Football Outsiders’ Ben Muth.

Word of Muth

Watching the Bills beat the Dolphins, you can see why people might be excited. Buffalo looked explosive when they had the ball, rattling off big pass plays one after another. It was a vertical attack that resulted in 31 points and a division win. The guys throwing and catching it are always going to get the attention, but the Bills' offensive line was very good as well.

The chemistry of the O-line is really noticeable. Dawkins-Spain-Mitch are right back from last year while Ford is continuing to pick up his play more and more. Curious to see where Mongo goes when he gets back. If D.Williams settles in it would be hard to displace him or Ford on the right side. Either way great problem to have.

This is the weakest link. We struggle to run the ball against a stout D. Solid pass protection. I for one am missing Feliciano. Ford has got to step up.

So what's a typical timeline for a torn pec?  Mongo had surgery July 31.

This article from Billswire implies he's only been out 3 weeks, but it's been 8 weeks since his surgery as of yesterday.

Could still be a while. I know it's the standard for a normal person but 6-8 weeks is when you can begin doing normally physical activity without worrying about issues.

I don't think manhandling people falls under normal though.

everyone heals differently.

I read one source that said "light strength training can begin 2-3 months after surgery"

Williams has been a solid upgrade. I can't imagine them benching him for either Ford or Feliciano.

I've seen similar but believe it was related to non - surgical healing time.

And with that, we're talking about a person that goes to their routine check up and not a professional athlete that is always being monitored.

Either way, I think will be out until at least week 8.  And I mean out in the sense of not practicing.

I have had it before.  The questions are degree and how much. Tears can be partial or pulled off bone completely. Is it a straight tear or was there other damage with it?

Heat/ice/ultrasound/electrical stimulation I went thru.  None of the newer technics or massages.

One patient I rehabbed with used a hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber and slept in it for periods of time.

Terrell Owens was an athlete which had one in his home and he was always in shape.

Quote

There are three grades of muscle and tendon tears. Your pectoralis tear will likely be graded by your physician. The grades are numbered by severity.

  • A grade I tear is simply an overstretching of the pec tendon.
  • A grade II tear is a partial tendon tear; some of the tendon is torn and some is still intact.
  • A full-thickness tear of your pectoralis muscle or tendon is a grade III and is the most severe. Grade III tears usually require surgery as an initial treatment to correct.

This is kind of a wham concept where the tight end traps the defensive tackle (Raekwon Davis, 98), but the wham tight end is actually in a combo block with the center, who releases to the second level after blocking the 3-tech with the tight end. That is such a hard play for a 3-technique to read, because to him it looks like the guard over him is pulling and the center is blocking back on him. That's power or counter to the opposite direction 99 out of 100 times. So the defensive tackle starts fighting across the center when he gets completely blindsided by the tight end. It's no wonder he gets knocked down. That's diabolical and I love it.

Brian Dabollical out here with inventiveness in the ground game

He really likes Morse.  Very alert and smart player.

That’s Ben for ya; he LOVES former tackles that play interior positions like a tackle 🤣

We are not one player away.  We have an excellent line, and some of the previous players and analysts are saying exactly that point.  Ford should develop into an excellent right Guard.  Either Feliciano will accept back up $ when healthy as his contract I believe is up at the end of the year, or we could lose him.  We will be tested this week with Donald and company.  We’ll see how they hold up and hopefully play as well as last week.

Coach, thanks for sharing as that was a fun link.  Very valuable info.
