16 out of 302 NBA players test positive for Covid 19

Recommended Posts

This is the results of the mandatory testing that the NBA did as part of restarting the NBA season. That is a little over 5%.

Not sure if most or not all these players  not knew that they had the virus before the test.

I really hope that the NFL will still be able to a season in 2020

no reason to believe NFL will be different (5%) at this time. However, there is still ways to go before the season and a majority of the 5% positive players will likely self quarantine before then and be virus free  by the time TC rolls around. still expect TC will start on time.

Test, Test and Test again will be the mantra for the season.

the main risk is of course for the staffers and coaches - these players are young and should overcome the virus without issues.

so far no deaths.. testing positive .. and dying.. maybe a bit of a difference

For the 1000th time, it's not about how sick the young healthy player gets, it's about the people they pass it on to.

A review of more than 4,000 U.S. patients who were diagnosed with novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) shows that an unexpected 20% of deaths occurred among adults aged 20-64 years, and 20% of those hospitalized were aged 20-44 years.

The expectation has been that people over 65 are most vulnerable to COVID-19 infection, but this study indicates that, at least in the United States, a significant number of patients under 45 can land in the hospital and can even die of the disease.

You mean like in nursing homes? Is that where they pass it on?

I mean like in birthday parties & stuff
https://www.mysanantonio.com/news/texas/article/Birthday-party-leaves-18-in-Texas-family-with-15367621.php

A nice family get-together - surprise party for 25.  18 people infected including 80 yr old parents and cancer patient.  The elderly mom stopped by briefly to drop something off, the elderly father didn't attend, neither did 10 others of the 18 family members who became infected.

Not dead, so must not count that 3 were hospitalized, very ill, and the father is still in ICU?

That's how it works.  Young healthy people get the virus asymptomatically or with mild symptoms they attribute to something else - seasonal allergies, say.  They infect people they have contact with, who infect people they have contact with.  Some clusters die out without anyone particularly susceptible being infected, like the Great Clips cluster in Springfield MO.  Other clusters spread to include someone susceptible, or someone who works with vulnerable people. Let's hypothetically say Josh Allen gets covid-19 and never knows it.  He was sick worse with a cold last fall.  He unintentionally infects his housekeeper who cleans for 5 other families.  One of those families includes a physician who sees patients residing in an assisted living facility.  And we're off.

And of course, some percentage (subject to debate) of the younger people do become seriously or critically ill and require hospitalization

Do you think the physician who sees patients in an ALF should be letting strangers in his home and touching everything?

Should nurses at those same facilities be getting drinks at a bar the night before her shift?

Very interesting blame shift here.

Why don’t we say something like this? If you are young and healthy, don’t go near people who aren’t. If you have to go near people who aren’t, don’t contact strangers. If you aren’t healthy, try to not contact anybody.

Ah, that damn Josh Allen’s fault that someone else coughed on grandma!

We know NBA is more vulnerable.  NFL players dribble all the time and the dribbling can pass virus.

Quote

Researchers at Yale and the NBA and National Basketball Players Association have partnered “to study the efficacy of a saliva-based method that quickly determines if someone is infected with the novel coronavirus,” the university announced on Monday.

Yale School of Public Health researchers have developed a COVID-19 testing method called SalivaDirect.

But what are the underlying conditions????

Yeah, I know a lot of 64 year olds who are pretty much 20.

How is she letting "strangers" in her home if she has a trusted cleaner who has been cleaning her house for years?  Never mind, don't tell me.

The point is that young healthy people are only a couple degrees of separation from people who are older or vulnerable.   You can say "well, they shouldn't be" but that's how it is.  And just how old is "older"?  What constitutes "vulnerable?"  It's all ill defined.  That's why it matters if young, healthy people are spreading covid-19 around.  They don't just keep it among themselves.

You bringing in a nurse going to a bar is a total non-sequitor and straw man, if that's your thing go talk to someone else.

That's an interesting...spin...on those statistics to try to minimize the perceived risk to the elderly.  Using broad demographics like "aged 20-64", and weasel words like "a significant number".

The important takeaway from it actually is that age 45+ sees a rise in hospitalizations, and 65+ sees a rise in deaths, as expected.  I don't understand the need to try to twist things to minimize that truth.
