The Patriots won't be nearly as bad as many are predicting.

Bill >

I agree they will be better than most people think. Maybe 9 wins. This board will collectively and probably rightly so lose their sh#t if Bill's lose first Patriots game at home.

McKenzie gets cut. All of the little gadget plays that McK did last year Stephon Diggs did for the Vikes. And, quite frankly, Diggs does them better. McK offered versatility that Daboll cherishes. Diggs makes him redundant. If there is a role that keeps McK on the team, it will be for the other versatile attributes that he has for which they may not want to risk Diggs-- special teams, etc. They had him in as a defensive back at one point last season. But, I don't think that is going to be enough to keep him on the team.

I've not seen this idea before but it has merit.

Did you mean to say he got ate up by terrible OTs?

I get that he is $6M less in guaranteed money than Lawson, but he's also five years older than Shaq, as well as trending down while Lawson is trending up in performance.  The more I hear about Addison, the less optimistic I am.  Why did Beane/McD basically commit two years to Addison (out of a possible three year deal)?  On paper this signing looks suspect.

CCR...that would be too many R's and C's.  Plus a bar playing CCR won't be serving Crown, but rather moonshine.

Lawson outplayed Murphy the last two years yet McD kept starting Murphy. Made no sense. Obviously we don't have all the facts but we watch the games and can see who made plays and who didn't.

I think you nailed it. He sees way less snaps.. so nine penalties in nine snaps is atrocious (just kidding) I don’t how how many snaps he was on the field, any site keep track of this? I have no problem getting Sweeney on the field  I think he is in line to take over his spot.

If you asked me I'd tell you look here: https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/nfl/snap-counts but you didn't so I wont.

Murphy has that 'DNA' and is a McDermott guy.  Lawson was a remnant from the Whaley era, yet could set an edge properly, was not a liability in run or screen defense (like Murphy is), and can still rush the QB to an extent.  Murphy got his sack stats from a few favorable matchups over the season; has a good game one week, then disappears the next week or two.  Also gets picked on during screen and sweep plays.  Not a consistent player.

I think Smith goes bye bye.

My unpopular take is that Sweeney ends up having the best TE numbers on the Bills next year.

I agree that with you in that if Sweeney does a half way decent job at blocking, he takes Smiths spot, but unless the drops get worse would be very surprised if Knox isn't clearly the #1 guy.   As has been mentioned Knox has the physical skills very few have at TE position.  He made some plays very few others could have. Admittedly drops were a concern, but lets give it another year first.

Lee Smith is actually a good role player on this team.  He is a superior inline blocker.  He had 9 penalties (8 accepted/1 declined) last year which is the big knock against him.  Interestingly though 7 of those were in three games - all losses to NE(3), Phil(2), and Clev(2).  For reference Dawkins had 12, Ford had 10, and Morse had 9 called against them.  Now these three are on the filed more far more than Smith which still makes his penalties frustrating.

I think he still makes the team with Knox, Kroft, and Sweeney goes to the PS one more time. I can see them letting Smith go and carrying an extra OT especially if the kid from UW pans out.  I'd be fine with that scenario but I do think Smith deserves a bit more credit on this board for his play than most give him.

Interested to see what others have to post

I think Smith is gone...NFL trending toward all-around tight ends, but  not so much blocking  specialists. What about Croom? And you think Trey Adam's  beats out Daryl Williams,Neceshke or Bates? He is injury prone and slow

Lee Smith had 329 offensive snaps, 30.2%.

I like your thoughts on Sweeney. I loved the pick. I think he's ready to take over for Lee. Sweeney was a really good blocker in college and showed really good hands. Limited athleticism, not fast or quick, but with all of the weapons around him, he will make one hell of a safety blanket for Josh. Now, Josh will have to realize sometimes a check down is the best play. Not Trent Edwards type check downs, mind you.

Well written Dopey.  Sweeney has more skills overall in terms of blocking, receiving, and a good check down.  Ethan, I know you meant well, but just don’t see Smith making the team.

Any talk out of the Bills organization or from Josh have been pretty much *crickets* on Tyler Kroft and Duke Williams

Neither attended the Florida workouts

Was Croom there?  And being an ex CFL player, Williams was required to work the off season at a Rona Building Centre.

Mario Addison will underachieve. He didn’t have a sack in like the last 8 games and he ate up terrible OTs other than that. I say he has less than 7 sacks which he hasn’t done in years.

Yeah, I don’t know. So many sacks last year were coverage sacks that he could accidentally get close to ten this year given our secondary has not changed.

With that being said, I have never watched the guy but my hopes are that he can at least control the LOS.
