Ending the National Anthem Debate

Recommended Posts

I coached Division 1 Men’s Basketball for many years and the Anthem was played most games several minutes before tip off. We would bring the team into the locker room with 10 minutes on the clock. They would do the Anthem @ the 8 minute mark. We’d come back out with 3-4 minutes left on the clock. It was the home teams decision when to do the Anthem. If the NFL adopted this practice it would take all of the political theater out of the game. I personally stand and put my hand over my heart for the Anthem. Both of my Grandfather’s and my father fought in various wars. Both grandmothers worked in factories making various things for the Armed services. But who am I to decide what others do. It’s there decision. Most vets I’ve talked to about this have told me this is why I fought for this Country so people have freedoms. I personally respect Kapernick for what he did. He sacrificed a lot. To me it’s pretty obvious we should have taken him serious three years ago.

If the anthem was played 8 minutes before kickoff, how many fans would be in the bathroom, buying food, milling around getting to their seats during the anthem, probably also interpreted as a sign of disrespect.

I'll mention it again in this thread, don't play the NA anything before or during the game.  Take that stage away from those looking to make a social statement, which will end up hurting revenue since a number of fans will not want to attend and/or watch on tv.

I'm not knocking the OP's suggestion but I think the best way to end the debate is to simply stop debating.

I'm also a combat vet and I will stand with my hand over my heart every time the anthem is played to honor my fallen comrades.  I will not debate with anyone who chooses to do something different.  This country was founded on the idea of individual liberty.

Was it founded on individual liberty or did we just get sick of the King taking all the money we made off the backs of slaves...?

People have the right to do whatever they please as far as kneeling goes.

But, for those that say the flag and military have no connection?

Explain this.....

Kneeling while the flag is being honored will always be one of the most disrespectful things a person can do in my eyes....but they do have the right to do that and I wouldn’t trample on those rights.

Right kneeling is terrible I'll never understand why people kneel when knighted by the Queen, such disrespect.

Tim Tebow disrespecting God.

Tim Tebow prevails in trademarking 'Tebowing'

The proper etiquette for praying is to kneel.

The proper etiquette for being knighted is to kneel.

The proper etiquette during the Star Spangled Banner while the flag is being displayed is to stand.

not necessarily. Some people kneel to pray. Sometimes people stand and pray. Some sit and pray. Some prostrate themselves to pray. It’s almost as if what’s “proper” depends on a person’s particular religious perspective. Maybe think about differing perspectives of people in this country before you make judgments. Or don’t and carry on being so sure about your moral rectitude.

Would love to hear your thoughts on the issue that is causing players to kneel in the first place. Fix that and you won’t even have to worry about the kneeling.

How about the President of the USA starting a BS war in Iraq and refusing to let the flag draped coffins of our Dead service members be shown ?  Then having the flag as a backdrop for “ Mission accomplished” as more of our men and women were sent off to their needless deaths.
That , imo, was a thousand times more egregious than a man peacefully protesting the killing of innocent people.

But why did we do the pledge in school while looking at the flag? That obviously had zero to do with the military. Sports has zero to do with the military. I think the flag branches out over all of our country and all citizens. The military obviously protects our citizens and country so that is their connection to the flag. But the flag itself is much bigger than just the military.

And as for the act of actually kneeling I really don’t find it disrespectful. If anything it shows more respect. You could stand and look at the flag just like you stand in a grocery store line. Or you could take a knee as a sign of respect. I recall after every football practice we all gathered around coach and took a knee and listened attentively as he addressed us.

I agree and I think this will happen at some point during the season.
