This happens all the time on in sports and business when new leadership comes in. You try to get your entire team on board. When it becomes apparent a few people aren’t on board, you get rid of them. Oh wait you mean the guy they showed on screen and talked about every three seconds for the entire playoff game vs Houston? Its even worse when you rewatch the game because without the excitement and suspense of an actual game you pay more attention to the rest of the noise. Honestly someone should call out the producer on that and make them rewatch how ridiculous that was highlighting a player over and over and over simply because he's a national big name. Its laugh out loud material after awhile. Almost as bad as all the hype and coverage Dallas gets and they've won a whopping TWO playoff games in 24 years. The Jets took a DT out of Alabama #3 overall just last year. Everybody wants CBs and athletic S and LBs that cover in today’s NFL (even edge rusher seems devalued). That said this is all fluid. Look at the more innovative offensive coaches in the league (McVay/Shannhan). They are building in the trenches around strong running games. He was a very young person, not chronological age but wrt maturity, when he arrived. He got to a Bills team with losing culture, and figured, OK then, that's how it is. He didn't push himself and no one really pushed him. No one, no matter how talented, makes it without hard work. It's all just a shame. The Bills had a gone hard at IOL in free agency and had gotten really deep there. There just wasn’t room for everybody. Teller was an odd man out, but still he had value and Beane got it. FWIW the Browns OL Coach, Bill Callahan, said he loves Teller in the Browns predominantly outside zone scheme and expects him to start at RG there this season. Run defense was a major issue for the Jags and he helped them improve and they almost won the SB. There’s a chance they keep Dareus and he improves his trade value and they could have traded him for more in the offseason. They gained zero by trading him when they did and you can’t argue otherwise. 2 - it’s hard not to argue that Dareus changed as after he got the money. He got lazy and complacent. I always gave him more of a pass because of his family stuff but you can’t deny it. The real shame is the guy had HOF talent and was one of the best young d linemen in the nfl at one point. Some Bills fans forget that he was an All Pro for the Bills. Most NFL players are driven to excel, so I find the idea of a player simply turning off that drive just because he's gotten a big contract the least likely reason for a player's performance to slack off. What frequently happens is that players change teams to get bigger contracts and the new situations aren't as good for them as the ones they left. Sometimes coaching changes impact players' performance adversely, too. They bring in new systems that don't fit the players or their personalities don't mesh well with some incumbent players. Dareus blossomed under Marrone, but then along came Ryan who tried to remake the excellent defense that he inherited, followed shortly by McDermott who brought in his own style of D. We, as fans, assume that McDermott and Dareus didn't get along. Maybe that's true -- or maybe the Bills brass under the money-ball philosophy of Russ Brandon decided he wasn't playing well enough to justify his salary. For myself, I think that Dareus suffered (possibly still does) some emotional/mental issue that impacted his play. When somebody -- anybody not just a pro athlete -- goes from being really great at something for a long time -- since high school at least in the case of NFL players -- and then suddenly starts just "going through the motions", it suggests something's wrong, Personal tragedy -- which Dareus suffered in spades -- as well as bad domestic or employment situations can all wreak havoc on individuals' job performance. 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
