your point is well taken that the position has become more a punt catcher than returner

Punters have become a lot better.

I liked what the XFL did though - nothing out of bounds inside the 20 or it gets pushed out to the 35.  Same with touchbacks - pushed to the 35.  They also wouldnt let gunners cross the LOS til the ball is punted.  So basically even an attempt at a high punt for a fair catch could end up rolling into the end zone if your gunners couldnt stop it.  More returns and more 4th down attempts.

I missed it live. Went to the bathroom thinking that I'd miss nothing.

Not my best thought process ?

My wife remembers what she was wearing when we were at some meaningless event many years ago....where as you apparently remember when you were going to the bathroom. I can barely remember what day it is. ?

Moody was quite good.

Butch Byrd was also excellent.  He was also an ALL STAR CB so we could barely spare to use him as a returner.

Lets not forget Steve Tasker, sure hands and he always got some yards after the catch.

I remember Keith Moody scoring a TD on a return, taking out a prop yellow flag and then spiking the ball on it.  I guess he had lost too many decent returns due to penalties.  I wonder what Google has to say of this.

That was against the Oilers in the Astrodome in 1978. Gave the Bills a 10-7 lead, though they ended up losing 17-10 after giving the Oilers (with rookie RB Earl Campbell, who would play in the AFC championship game that year and the next) a surprisingly tough time.

Great.  My initial search did not find it.  I did find a nice back story on Keith when he was inducted to the Syracuse Sports HoF.

The 1:17 mark, 2:00 mark, and 4:23.

I remember Berman replaying that last punt return on ESPN and doin his "whuuup!" "Whuup!"  everytime he made someone miss.   To this day I still say that inside cut he makes AFTER the spin move on that return is the best football move I've ever seen.

Lee Evans, josh reed and roscoe trio there was an excellent group.

Yeah, Roscoe had that unique ability to not just be able to cut on a dime, but go from stop to full speed in a couple of steps.

Andre Roberts catches everything and never fumbles.  Meanwhile, Leodis McKelvin single handedly lost us games because of him fumbling kicks.  No thank you.

And Roberts has been a victim of some pretty awful special teams blocking.  We can't seem to cover any gunners, the only way he ever gets any chance on a good punt return is if they out-kick the coverage.  I agree with Astro we will be looking for another returner in this draft, but I don't see Roberts losing the job to anyone.  And he's a great dude, McD loves the guy.

During those years, any return was exciting because it was either McGee on KO's, or Roscoe on punts.

One of my favorites was when McGee returned one in the third quarter against the Cowboys on MNF.

During those years, special teams and defense was our best chance of scoring a touchdown.
