The Iso: Dion Dawkins (The Players Tribune)

Recommended Posts

The Players’ Tribune is introducing a new series called The Iso. With so many of us keeping our distance from each other in a variety of ways, we decided to ask some of our favorite athletes to share how they’ve been dealing with life in the Covid-19 world, and how they’re spending their time away from their sport.

Quote

A little background on myself: I have a brother who is incarcerated in South Jersey.

I’ve just been thinking, Yo, any virus out there is definitely going to get in that prison from the people that’s coming in and out of work every day. Which means, it’s just going to be a Giant. Infected. Place. My brother has no hope. He’s just sitting there, vulnerable to catching whatever comes through, whether that’s corona or something else. And he might not even know exactly what it is because they don’t have access to all of this info like we do.

have a couple of teammates who are trying to partner up to figure out a way to donate together, which I think is great. But we’re still trying to figure out where is the best place for it to go. We were thinking, Should we put it all into Buffalo, or should we directly target our home communities? I’m from North Jersey — from a place where people would need it. Not saying that any place needs it more, but we’re just trying to figure out which place is best.

His own brother incarcerated for what is my first question? I didn't see it mentioned.

Pandemics reoccur every 50-100 years, that doesn't mean everyone gets to walk out of jail, which is exactly what he wants before anyone says he isn't advocating for that.

I didn’t get that impression from reading it

Incarcerated prisoners do have rights.  They are sentenced to a certain term in prison but that does not mean they have to endure unsafe conditions.  Paying their penalty to society does not mean being locked up without the means to avoid communicable diseases, or not having access to testing (and millions of us outside of prison shouldn't be deprived of the chance to get tested due to the administration's incompetence, either).

To respond to njbuff, prisoners are still citizens.  Of course they are.  Felons lose some rights, some permanently and others temporarily, but they do not lose their citizenship.

I feel for Dawkins, I would hate to see my brother in a similar circumstance. In a sense our health care workers face a similar situation, hundreds of thousands of infected people are under their care and they are the bulwark that fights the spread. It is a sad situation at best, when a segment of our society pretends it is a fabrication of the media it only makes everything harder to bring under control.

Keep healthy Bills Nation!!!

True, he didn't exactly finely articulate his points. Do you get the impression from the article that Dawkins is an especially intelligent man? I certainly didn't get that impression from reading it....

Especially given the talk of releasing prisoners in the media the last couple of weeks, what would you want if you were in his shoes? I'm not saying that feeling would be invalid or even unreasonable. Just not feasible for society, and I believe other intelligent people should be able to see that.

Oh, I just found the Wonderlic. Any guesses? I'll put the O/U at 14 just for kicks.

Personally. I did not read his comments as if he is advocating for his brother, or others, to be released from jail.  I read it as he is concerned and worried about his brother's health.

Seems like you've been reading too many other articles/people advocating for this. but please dont put words in someone's mouth

The interview was about how he’s dealing with the Covid situation. That included his brothers circumstances but also included a lot of other things. I don’t really see where you are coming from. He mentioned it as part of the situation he’s dealing with (he has to parent his nephew right now as a result) but not sure why it’s a referendum on his intelligence that he chose to discuss this part of his life.

What do you believe is the impetus for the Players Tribune to print the article, do you think they were unaware of his family situation?

It is just one article in a series of interviews with athletes about how they are dealing with the current environment. Why wouldn’t they print it? People have real lives not everything is pretty.

Why would they print it was my question, and you didn't answer it, you simply deflected.

Is that is this the only article the Player's Tribune  printed?  Why are you so riled about this particular one?  Why are you going into a diatribe about the man's intelligence?   William Barr just directed federal prisons to send some prisoners home; his directive.  Dawkins didn't say anyone should be released.  They printed it because he's an athlete, and an athlete that his written for their site before.

You didn't answer the simple question either. Barr isn't releasing anyone convicted of violent crimes, sex crimes etc. Not even close.

Perhaps I was a little harsh. This article, manipulative leftist drivel that it is, hits close to home right now. I apologize for being a dick. You obviously hadn't thought as far into it and took it at face value, which is perhaps what I should have done.

I haven't heard of anyone asking for that to happen. What's your beef here?

Never would have guessed that you had a right wing viewpoint. Shocking.
